80% and I have a Bota box in the fridge.
I’m in the middle of taking it, and I’m already bitching about the questions and definitions. Good sign, sigh.
I liked Tom, too, when he’d post on Robin Garr’s board, way back when.
And 20/20. So I should stop whining. (And start wining.)
I picked up a bottle of Spier 2019 Pinotage for $12 I think. On a scale of 1-10 I’d say it’s a 4 or 5. It’s smooth but I’m not getting a lot of fruit or other flavors from it. Could be a more expensive bottle or older vintage would be better. BTW this is the first wine I’ve had from South Africa. It got a 3.4 on Vivino.
Speaking of which, what do you think of the Vivino App, @Gray_Ghost ? For dopers who haven’t discovered it: you take a picture of the label and it accesses a database, tells you how others have rated the wine, gives you an average price paid for a bottle, etc.
Bummer about that Pinotage. Craven’s Cinsault is on sale, floorstacked locally, and seems to get decent reviews.
I’ve not used Vivino, but I rely a bit on cellartracker.com and winesearcher.com for research in the store. The reviews on CT aren’t by pros, but I can get a gist of the set of primary flavors, and whether She is likely to like it. Still more Edits: some pros I do recommend reading are Allen Meadows (BurgHound) and Fisch and Raver’s Mosel Fine Wines.
EDIT: Usually I’m a lot faster just typing in the info on the label, and slow trying to get my camera into action. I totally see the utility of Vivino’s interface though. Especially for labels which can be inscrutable, like old school Gothic script German wine labels
I thought I’d mix my own red. Take some of the sweet Barefoot, mix with the Cinsault…not bad!
I’ll try other pinotages when I get the chance. The local place didn’t have many so I started small. It could be the more expensive ones are great but the cost makes them “special occasion” wines. Thanks for the resources!
Bumped.
This new book may be of interest to Doper wine-lovers:
We found a favorite of Mrs. L the other day, available in the double bottle size. I looked at her and sang, “That’s when I fell for…the liter and a half.”
Maybe you had to be there.
I drink Cabernet out of a box!
