My stuff isn’t from a bumper sticker, Mark Twain, or some cruddy movie. Phrase one came into being after my first child waddled into toddlerhood. And the phrase was repeated often, especially when her brother joined the family. I said it so much, they could recite it with me. “If it’s not yours, LEAVE IT ALONE!” Phrase two came into being when I was assigned a position where I had to help the public do research of our record maps maintained at the District Office. (I worked for the State of Confusion, I mean California, Department of Transportation–CalTrans.) Many times, the people had no engineering background. The would be collecting information for a permit. It’s hard to help someone who doesn’t know what he or she wants! My coworker was often dismissive. That wasn’t completely his fault. The guy who trained him was a sanctimonious jerk. I would take the time to find out what was needed, maybe teach a little background, explain what we had and what we didn’t have. And if they needed information from another agency, I’d even give a map where that place was located and told them what to ask for when they got there. I told my coworker:“Every single person who walks through that door signs your paycheck!” But the one thing I repeated over and over: “Courtesy costs you nothing.” I don’t think he ever really got it. ~VOW ---
