Looking for suggestions on music to listen to when I work out. My resolution for 2011 is to find more high energy music than the normal Top 40 stuff. While searching for music I found this video, its pretty funny and the song gets me moving. Wait until the end for a url to get the song for free:questionable link removed

Music suggestions welcome. Any songs you can’t go to the gym without?

I run several times a week (was outside until the snow hit, now I’m confined to a treadmill at the Y). Upbeat music definitely helps me.

Some of my favorites (note how old this stuff is, but then, note my age):

- AC/DC (“Back in Black”, “Thunderstruck”, “TNT”)
- Toto (at least the faster stuff, like “Hold the Line” and “Girl Goodbye” from their first album)
- Tom Petty (with or without the Heartbreakers, such as “I Need to Know”, “Running Down a Dream”, and “You Wreck Me”)
- Traveling Wilburys

Depends on what I’m doing.

**Cardio:short/fast**
Anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Angelique Kidjo-Agolo
Stone Temple Pilots-Trippin’ on a Hole…
Beastie Boys-Sabotage
Pat Benatar-All Fired Up
Imani Coppola-Gravity
JC Brooks-Get It Together
Anything by Joe Tex
Any Best of Bootie Mix (free mash-ups)

**Cardio: long/distance**
More into podcasts/movies on the iPod ready treadmill. I can go for 1.5 hours on a treadmill watching a movie. Although while watching “The Crazies” I almost jumped at the gym while jogging when someone tapped me on the shoulder. Not a movie to be snuck up on while watching.

**Weight Lifting**
I am usually listing to more mellow music. I did 245lb squats on Saturday to Norah Jones’ “Those Sweet Words”. I like to be able to concentrate on the lift and have it move slower than try and zoom through the motion and eff up my form.

Not normally my kind of music, but once I’m warmed up, if this comes up in rotation, I’m GONE:

My current playlist has the following:

Professional Friend by Kosheen

New Slang by The Shins

Front Row by Metric

Such Great Heights by The Postal Service

Major Tom by Shiny Toy Guns

You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away by The Beatles

We Are the People by Empire of the Sun

The Cave by Mumford and Sons

There are a few others mixed in, but the above seem to strike the right mental note lately when I workout.

For cardio it’s usually high BPM “club,” techno type stuff, 80s dance, some 70s, with maybe a few popular modern C&W songs thrown in. A typical cardio playlist will have everything from Beyonce to KC and the Sunshine Band to the Beastie Boys to Cab Calloway. For weight lifting it’s heavy metal (get it? :D). No, I don’t know why, it just seems like a more useful “vibe” for weight lifting for some reason.

I think we must be related because I’ve got a lot of these songs on my running play list, too. I also have some really cheesey stuff that’s probably more appropriate for a 15-year old instead of a 35-year old woman:

Evanescense (sp?) - Bring Me to Life
A few songs by Prince
Bizarre Love Triangle
Queen - Fat Bottom Girls
Who Knew - Pink
Gotta Be Someone - Nickelback
My Life Would Suck without You - Can’t remember who…Kelly Clarkson?
Black Horse and a Cherry Tree - K.T. Tunstall
I Would Do Anything for Love - Meatloaf (I almost fall over giggling when it starts)
Love is a Battlefield - Pat Benetar
We Belong - Pat Benetar
Some Aerosmith (but it’s really best for weight lifting)
I’m Yours - Jason Mraz (great for warm ups)

For cool downs, I like

100 Years - Can’t remember the artist; maybe 5 For Fighting
Please Don’t Leave Me - Pink

Ok, we’re totally related because I have almost every one of those songs, too. And I’m a 40-year-old guy. Funny how that old stuff has a good workout beat, isn’t it?

I meant to add, today I got the BPM Analyzer (free download, no apparent limits), and ran it against my music collection. It took a couple of hours, but added a “BPM” tag to my mp3 collection.

Then I created playlists for each range of 5 bpm’s, and threw those on my phone, so I can choose what tempo I want to run to.

It’s not perfect, but it seems pretty good.
