Favourite cover songs played with unusual instruments

I like Luna Lee’s stuff, but that one’s definitely not my favourite…Gorillaz’ Feel Good Inc, or Bowie’s Space Oddity probably take that place.

This ukulele cover of Hurt (specifically based on Cash’s cover), by a lady named Mary Red, was surprisingly good, albeit weird.

Some good suggestions in this thread: Peculiar versions of songs and other musical works

I’d never heard of the harpejji before, but I’m glad I have now! Thanks!

How about Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on several Kotos? Here are “Spring” and “Winter”.

How about While My Keytar Gently Weeps, on a synthesizer.

Thanks! I did a search for similar threads before starting this one, but evidently I didn’t cover all the right keywords.

Rondellus: Sabbatum – an album of Black Sabbath songs sung in Latin with traditional medieval instruments.

Purple Haze on three cellos

Awesome! Even better than Ensemble Ambrosius doing Zappa.

Metallica on four cellos

Love this.

A Crazy Train/YMCA mashup on cello and bass.

How about playing a modern (metal) song on modern instruments, but recording it with 100 year old equipment? Rob Scanlon is a guitarist/songwriter who recorded his metal band on a wax cylinder.

For some reason that reminds me of Deathgasm. Which, if you haven’t seen, you completely should.

This kind of thing is not as uncommon as it used to be (Iron Horse, etc.) but these guys were first.

I do love jazz bassoon, and one of the earliest and best is Michael Rabinowitz.

Nowadays we have the fabulous Gunhild Carling, multi-instrumentalist, she can play most anything, including bagpipes. (Google her and listen up, she’s great!) But before there was Gunhild, there was the iconoclast Rufus Harley, jazz bagpiper. Played with Sun Ra, Sonny Rollins, lotsa other people.

Oh hell, Gunhild Carling on 10 Different Instruments and Postmodern Jukebox … tap dancing and being all “Happy”:

How’s that?

“Thunderstruck” by a Scots-Australian with a bagpipe that shoots flames.

David Chen on Cello, Annie Jantzer vocals covering Wicked Game.

If you enjoy David’s cello work, listen to his other covers, including a bunch of looping covers.

Ooh, that reminds me to post this vocal version by Al Jarreau. I suppose that vocals aren’t a particularly unusual instrument (or maybe not even an instrument at all) but I would never have imagined they’d be suited to this piece.

How about Dolly Parton’s Stairway to Heaven

I always thought that song needed a banjo.

I don’t know that I have a favorite, and these are not that unusual instruments, but Vitamin String Quartet has tributes to many acts and genres.

I’m kinda partial to Ravel’s Bolero done in its entirety with kazoo. Especially the crescendo.
