Favourite cover songs played with unusual instruments

Build Me Up, Buttercup played on the ukulele by Julia Nunes.

And there’s just something about that video that makes it so, I dunno, wonderful. I can’t really define it. It’s fun, natural, and musical. I’ve probably watched it 300 times. I never tire of it.

Yep! Everyone involved is just so into it and happy.

Here’s a bit of mastery: David Lindley - Minglewood Blues - 4.03.2015 - YouTube

David Lindley, Jackson Browne’s long time sideman and owner of a couple of hits himself (Mercury Blues is a fave!) - here he is rocking an Oud - a middle eastern lute. The first two minutes are straight up oud music - I don’t know technique but it sounds very oud-y ;). But then at 1:50 he breaks into a classic Delta Blues. Holy shit does he rock it. He makes that oud sound like a 1928 Gibson L-1.

I may have mentioned it on these boards in the past, but there is a band called Self that did an entire album with toy instruments. The album is called Gizmodgery. It includes a cover of the Doobie Brothers’ “What a Fool Believes” that is actually quite good.

Which shows it’s more about style and tuning than the instrument. It’s basically a fretless 12-string minus the second string.
