OMG. 80 posts and no mention of **The Carrie Nations** from _Beyond the Valley of the Dolls_?? Surely they win. Every song of there’s in the movie rules, especially “Find It” which is the first one you hear in the movie. I love their album title “Look On Up At The Bottom”. Also, they’re incredibly hot.

Has anybody else seen a shitty made-for-teev movie called _Rock-A-Die, Baby_? It featured a band - name escapes me. They had some good songs. I’m hanging out for this movie to appear on TV again. The movie itself was atrocious.

**The Masked Marauders.**

Never heard of them? They were a late sixties supergroup consisting of John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, and Bob Dylan. At least according to _Rolling Stone_ magazine, who featured a review of the Marauders self-titled album in late 1969. Greil Marcus, then RS records review editor, came up with the bogus review that lauded their double-LP featuring such cuts as an 18-minute version of Donovan’s “Season Of The Witch” (with Dylan’s lead vocal doing a “superb imitation of early Donovan”) and the “instant classic” of Jagger’s “I Can’t Get No Nookie.” The story was that the band had to conceal their identities for contractual reasons (naturally).

However, they might not count as a fake band since Marcus then went out and found a real band to cut the songs that were mentioned in the review, doing their best to imitate the implicated performers. Rhino recently reissued the original recordings with the following song list:

I Can’t Get No Nookie
Duke Of Earl
Cow Pie
I Am The Japanese Sandman (Rang Tang Ding Dong)
The Book Of Love
Later
More Or Less Hudson’s Bay Again
Season Of The Witch
Saturday Night At The Cow Palace
Cow Pie (MONO Single Version)
I Can’t Get No Nookie (MONO Single Version)

The Lone Rangers from _Airheads_

Fuck Your Yankee Blue Jeans, the band that Silent Bob’s cousin Olaf sings for in _Clerks_

Autobahn, which Uli the nihlist was a member of in _The Big Lebowski_

And just because I want to brag about this, and it’s sorta kinda on topic: I was just given a Spinal Tap On Tour with Sure T-Shirt. A friend of my mom’s actually saw them perform and got the shirt, which he then traded to my mom in exchange for web design work.

I stand corrected - although the Rag took up the entire second side of the album, which explains my confusion.

For evidence that my mind is not going, I remembered the name of the faux-British band from Thomas Pynchon’s _The Crying of Lot 49,_ The Paranoids. I can’t remember the name of Bucky Wunderlick’s band from Don DeLillo’s _Great Jones Street,_ so either my mind is partially going or the band isn’t named in the book. I do remember one of his songs: “Pee Pee Maw Maw.”

And how about:
The Soggy Bottom Boys
Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers
The Jonah Levin Band (I think, from _One Trick Pony_)

And, uh, I believe Jem and the Holograms to be real.

Reading the OP before posting is usually a good idea…

**Eddie and the Cruisers**

“We’re \*not \*great, we’re just a couple of kids from Jersey” was my friends’ and my slogan all through high school.

A lot to comment upon!

There were at least 2 actual 80s punk bands called The Stains. One moved from Texas to San Francisco & became MDC.

It’s funny that the _Quincy_ band was called Mayhem because they have nothing on the [actual black metal Norwegian band of the same name](http://www.mp3.com/mayhem/artists/35753/biography.html).
Both The Archies and The Banana Splits appear to have released their first records in 1968, although one music site has a 1967 ‘founding’ date for the band. I don’t think either are ‘fake’ bands, though, just studio projects. You’d probably have to go back to the dawn of recorded music to name someone the first ‘fake’ band (complete with name of a band that never played live and perhaps even an illustration of fake band in advertising).

The very real Beau Brummels ‘appeared’ on _The Flintstones_ as The Beau Brummelstones.

> The Bedbugs appeared on “F Troop,” and Agarn quit the Army to become their manager.

Speaking of Agarn, on a old episode of “Get Smart” he played “Groovy Guru” whose band “ **The Sacred Cows** ” were part of his plot to take over America by mesmerizing the young with their psychedelic music.

“Dweedle-dweedle-dweedle…”
And who can remember **The Mummies and the Puppies** and their rendition of Daddy Dewdrop’s “Chick-a-boom” from the Archies-affiliated cartoon show “Groovy Goolies”?
