I have always been immensely fond of Baron Astley’s prayer before the Battle of Edgehill: O Lord, Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget Thee, do not forget me. Which he immediately followed up by telling his troops, “March on, boys”. ---

[God Help the Outcasts](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESVAexpA1Wc) is a good prayer set to music. And I don’t know if this is true or not, but Malcolm X said in his autobiography that traditionally, a Muslim on his pilgrimage to Mecca will cry out “Labayka!” which is supposed to translate to something like “Here I come!” I use that on my way up to receive the Eucharist. “Please God, don’t let me fuck up.” I think Tom Wolff, the author of "The Right Stuff, referred to it as the Astronaut’s Prayer. Well before he wrote that book I frequently said that same prayer many times right before running out of the tunnel for a football game. But when I thought about it, what I really meant to pray was… please don’t let me fuck up in front of **all these people.** I always feared not just fucking up but embarrassing my family if I did something real stupid…in front of lots of people.
