Evidently he meant the second, but he would describe it differently. Sure it is not “sycophantic” when it is all really about you, is it? Thus “his” four years. Something like: - During the shortened transition period, documents were packed in haste. - It was the President’s understanding that, despite their markings, all the documents had been declassified. - When we were alerted by the National Archives that some of the documents belonged to them, we did our best to comply. - Unfortunately, errors in filing led to certain boxes staying at Mar-a-Lago that should have been returned. - We were in the process of preparing those documents for return when the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago. - All of this could have been avoided if the DOJ had simply alerted us to to the issue sooner and been more patient. I know it’s all bullshit – and ignorance and incompetence are not legal defenses – but it might be enough to convince a jury (and lots of voters) that Trump didn’t commit a felony. ---

Except for the affidavit stating that they had no more documents and therefore wouldn’t be returning anything else. I suppose they can claim that affidavit was submitted in error and hope that a jury believes them, but given how easily the FBI was able to find those documents (hopefully) the jury would see right through that. ---

I’m convinced that the central political strategy going forward is going to be one of minimizing… _what is the big deal? All this noise and fury over what is essentially some administrative irregularity. Who hasn’t ever had an overdue library book?_ I’ve yet to hear any viable legal strategy that’s going to extricate Trump from his present troubles. ---

Oh, absolutely. With a healthy dose of “But what about Hillary? What about Obama? What about Hunter Biden?” with the implication being everybody does it and the only reason Trump is being treated differently is because the Democrats are out to get him. It will absolutely work with the 35% of the country that loves him no matter what (and hates Democrats). It will likely work with at least one juror if it goes to trial - resulting in no conviction. What will decide things is (a) will it work with the GOP leadership and right-wing media to the point that they continue to defend him even while he is on trial and (b) will it work with the general electorate (the non-MAGA 65%). I think the outcome of the midterms will tell a lot. If Trump is the face of the GOP, which it seems he will be, and the GOP _doesn’t_ get a big wave, then I think you will see a lot of hand-wringing around whether they can continue to support him during a potential trial and heading into the 2024 general election. ---

I wonder how much Jared Kushner spoke with Trump before this interview and agreed on what to say to these questions that would obviously come up. I wonder if this is Trump’s new strategy, say it was merely a paperwork error. Or if this is just something Kushner came up with by himself. ---

It seems the documents in the office will be the key since it appears DOJ/FBI was aware of the storage room but had signed statements that there wasn’t anything classified in the office. A logical inference is that the stuff in the office was what was being hidden.
