But so…with it being confirmed that it really was an expedition to pull back things that didn’t belong to Trump, the questions turn to: 1. How much of the materials were genuine White House work product vs. private Trump materials? 2. And, thereby, how much of the materials are likely to be responsive to a subpoena by: - January 6 Committee - House Oversight Committee (for various financial crimes) - House Intelligence and Financial Services committees (ditto) - House Ways and Means Committee (tax avoidance) - House Oversight Committee (for security / classification mismanagement) - House Judiciary Committee (obstruction of justice / corruption) - House Oversight Committee (illegal census questions) - Various civil and criminal investigations underway by State and Federal officials around the country And how, for a Congressional subpoena, does it clean itself of the “taint”? ---

Given the high-risk maneuver this is for DOJ and the FBI, I tend to think that there was a very good reason to believe that TFG was not only in possession of classified material, but that it was either being so carelessly stored and handled that it posed a national security risk just for being there, or that TFG was using it in some unauthorized/illegal/dangerous way. Given his inherent nature, my bet would be on some kind of enrichment scheme; sale of some stuff to the Saudis, for example. Possibly something he would use for blackmail (and, hence, personal enrichment). Otherwise, I don’t see why DOJ or the National Archives wouldn’t just proceed through more mundane and less exciting means to acquire the docs. There has to be some kind if time-sensitive factor in the monumental decision to do this. Also, if the reason for executing the search warrant was simply to re-acquire documents that TFG shouldn’t have had, then the process is essentially complete and someone from the Federal government would have made a public statement by now. The fact that the Feds have been silent suggests to me that the search warrant is just one (admittedly dramatic) piece of a larger investigation. I suspect it will be a little while before we get the whole picture (or even a bigger piece of the whole picture). I, for one, will be staying tuned. ---

The feds can’t get a criminal search warrant just to recover property. The affiant has to provide reasonable cause that a federal offence is occurring, and that there is evidence relevant to that federal offence at the location to be searched. ---
