I agree. Any language that can turn “streetcar stop” into “strassenbahnhaltestelle” can come up with something for “thrown under a bus.” My high German just doesn’t have that vocabulary any more, I’m afraid. The other construct I could remember is “wolfsfutter.” Although that might sound better in Russian. ---

Hey, you guys gave me a challenge to come up with the perfect German word, but all I can offer is “Unterdenbusschmeissopfer”. I think this word isn’t funny, but maybe you like it. Of course I made it up. Wolfsfutter is not bad, either. ---

Several words mean “denounced/calumniated”, but I’m not sure any carry quite the same implied force of placing the blame for one’s own actions on an underling who might at worst have just been doing what you told them to do.
