Trump gives orders (whether explicit or, more commonly, implicit) to other people who relay the orders. That’s how he knows he’s important. The closer he is to people who actually do things, the lower down the chain that puts him, and the less important he is. This is why he places such a premium on loyalty; he depends heavily on people who can interpret and pass on his wishes, the less directly stated the better: previously Cohen, and now Nauta. If he’s giving directives to the actual labor, they may ask clarifying questions he doesn’t want to answer. Anyway, the point is, it’s easy to say that no sane person would do what Trump did, and _to an extent_ that may be true, but it must be recognized that he couldn’t have done all this himself, so either he’s very good at finding people who share his specific nuttiness, or it’s overstating things to say this makes him a legally incompetent loon. ---

To be completely fair, I think that there are a few among his remaining supporters for whom it’s a matter of principle: They won’t judge anyone for their criminal activity until it’s proven, and it’s the job of the jury, not them, to determine when it’s been proven. I don’t think this accounts for very many of them, and I think it’s a lousy principle, but there are probably a few. ---

Why shouldn’t he represent himself? After all, nobody knows more about the law than he does. If I’m ever in court for my life or freedom, I’d like to represent myself just long enough to call the prosecutor “my learned colleague”. Then get a real lawyer. ---

That August debate (and the RNC Convention) is in my town. I’ll be thrilled if he skips it/them. I have no idea how many people will be descending on Milwaukee, but if he’s not here, hopefully there’s less of a chance of things getting scary. We were supposed to host the 2020 DNC convention, but Covid cancelled it. Also, did Trump call Chris Christie a…slub? I looked at the subtitles, but “he’s not tougher on anybody’s slope” doesn’t make much sense either. ---
