**The Strain** has had some nice little Easter Eggs pop up in background news reports about the effect the epidemic is having on the world outside NYC (global financial collapse, POTUS being impeached, & Russia invading the Baltics for example)

The toe-webbing injection site of the morphine drip made me squeal “EWWWWWWICKICKICK!!!” I did not think it was badass. It made me wonder if the dying guy had any blood-borne pathogens.

But I’m not a core audience of anything other than PBS period dramas these days.

I’m pretty sure this is movie bullshit, some other well known movie or TV show featured this and the consensus was it was bullshit(probably here). People assumed they did not want to feature a more realistic depiction of drug use, seriously try to find a vein big enough between your toes.

Well, I hate Nick because I’m SUPPOSED to hate Nick. He’s a wretched junkie with no redeeming features who’d steal morphine from a dying man. I can’t help but think that the writers were thinking, “Yeah, Nick’s gonna get some audience hate.”

@alphaboi867: yeah, I wouldn’t have minded seeing some TV clips, some radio soundbites, CB radio chatter, SOME damn thing involving “what’s going on outside the community?” Apparently, someone on the show feels this is too overused a device, and that our heroes wouldn’t be the least bit curious. Either that, or things collapsed way too fast for anyone to notice… which seems a tad contrived.

This last episode implied that action was taken to silence the media; I can’t see any way the cell phone towers would have quit working so fast.

You’d be surprised how easy they get overloaded by too many users, then once the power is out the battery back up or generators at the towers last 24-48 hours, after that they’re down. I know from experience in a hurricane, even with spotty power the cell network was first overloaded then dead for days.

My ignorance is hereby done fought. On the subject of cell phones, that is. I thank you for your enlightenment.

And we’d lose the radio stations and the TV stations when the power went out. And of course, most people don’t have a ham radio or CB or police band handy; it’s not out of the question that no one in this neighborhood would have one.

But I’m still a tad cheesed that our neighbors have lost power except for a short time every day, their movements are restricted, they’re under martial law, and there is NO COMMUNICATION with any outside entity. Even the Nazis knew better than this. Hell, broadcast propaganda or old _I Love Lucy_ episodes… it’s better than NOTHING. Even if it’s just preapproved news that’s gone through military channels, on a public AM radio band; I know for a fact the National Guard is equipped to do that, even if they have to set up a PA system to blare it through the neighborhood.

Even the Nazis knew you can’t let the occupied stew for too long. It’s one of the things that makes it believable that these aren’t National Guard or regular Army, but bad guys just wearing the uniforms, simply because it’s very difficult to imagine the NG high command being so… _stupid._ It’s also, frankly, rather cheesy writing.

It may be a bit early for that sort of thing.

I’ve heard of beginner users (or those who can’t find veins or can’t inject themselves) popping between the toes. Bonus: not visible. So that didn’t raise any questions for me, and made sense in context.

EDIT to add: though now that I think about it, the tissues in the foot would not be able to move the fluid into the body fast enough, so that’s not a good place for an IV of morphine. Too much fluid.

Perhaps. But part of the show is being able to plug yourself in. What would YOU do in this situation?

And I am here to tell you that if I heard there was a plague going around, and people were getting sick and going insane, I’d call in and take a few days off from work and stay glued to a variety of communications sources… TV, radio, internet, and smartphone.

And as those things began to wink out one by one, I would grow concerned.

And if they winked out ALL AT ONCE, around the time the Army declared martial law…

This is one of the things that irritated me about the nine day time jump. These are things I would have liked to have seen addressed. In my case, they are certainly things I would be talking about to my neighbors and family… as opposed to complaining about how many coats of paint it’ll take to cover Archie’s brains that we splattered across the living room wall…

After tonight’s episode I’m more convinced that the root problem is a lack of budget. The series is filmed inside a couple houses, a couple rooms in a detainment center, and inside a Humvee. When the military goes in an infested building, the camera waits _in_ _the truck_ with the civilian. It’s like the series is produced with the budget of a college film student.
Zombie count: 2, both long distance.
Surprising sponsor: U.S. Army

And did it bother anyone else to note that LAST episode, Nick the Junkie’s the sharpest guy in the family, but then he gets his fix and suddenly starts packin’ around the Idiot Ball again?

Then again, it’s not like heroin makes you any smarter…
