The only time in my life I’ve needed a birth certificate (actually, a _fe de vida_, a document stating that my birth had been reported and my death hadn’t), I got it from the Civil Records Office and took it to the Court within the week. They kept it. ---

I figured he was doing it in the hopes that, if he proved he was an even bigger hard-ass on illegal immigration than the Bushies were, the Republicans would be more amenable to a deal on immigration reform. But I still didn’t like it one bit, and neither did plenty of other people I knew. And fat lot of good it did: the Republicans STILL (quite dishonestly!) portrayed him as weak on immigration, and they chickened out on immigration reform. ---

They kept it. I needed mine for my passport, and it took a month to get it from the US State Department. I needed my children’s birth certificates for their passports, and before that for them to register for LIttle League.
