Feds Close down 321 Studios makers of DVD copying software

You do realize that all your posts in this thread are still visible, don’t you? It’s obvious that your point was not “sometimes it’s appropriate to go after the means”, but “this time it’s appropriate to go after the means”, and no honest reading of my responses would suggest that I agree with it.

So far we have one proven instance of someone using the software for piracy, and we have a good reason to believe that person was caught because of the anti-piracy features in the software itself. There is no need to ban this tool, preventing people from using it for legitimate purposes, when it’s so easy to track down the people who misuse it.

Let’s try this again. You asked for proof that it’s never used for piracy. I said that other products aren’t held to that standard and give an example of a widely misused product that has far more serious consequences when it’s misused. You respond it’s a specific thing, not a general thing - that this one product should be held to the standard that no one can ever use it in an illegal manner or it should be illegal. I want to know WHY it’s a specific thing, WHY does this one product have to be held to a standard that’s not applied to anything else?

Ah, yeah. And yet, DVD backup software is rarely fatal if you misuse it while cars can be very, very fatal.

But how can you have it both ways? You want us to prove that it’s never ever used to do the wrong thing, but you won’t accept that there’s legitimate ways to use it, and that they should be taken into consideration too. It’s massively unfair to ban this one product on the basis that some people may have misused it to the detriment of no one.

That still doesn’t make sense to me, no matter how many times you repeat it. We don’t outright ban other things that have legitimate uses because some people may misuse them. You scoff when we apply it to other things like cars because you say it’s ridiculous, you don’t ban something as convenient as a car simply being millions of people misuse them every day! So why would you please explain why DVD duplication software must be banned if you can prove a single case of misuse and while ignoring all the legitimate uses it can be put to, or why no other product should ever be held to that standard of 100% honest usage?
