Please ignore the screaming idiots in this thread. There are so many cats that are put down every day because there are not enought people who can take them in. Any cat that has the chance to live in a loving home is a lucky cat. You have tried everything else, and as far as giving it up, I don’t know anyone who would adopt a cat who will destroy their furniture when there are a hundred other cats they could adopt. People who say just give the cat away to another home are kidding themselves.
There is no reason why you should be expected to let a cat destroy your house. This does not mean you are “choosing your furniture over your cat.” There are not enough rolleyes to express my feelings about that sentiment.
I believe people who abuse, neglect, or let their pets breed uninhibited are the ones people should be directing their rage at. NOT people like the OP who are providing loving homes.
I have to say you’ve done that right thing Lady Venom. Some cats cannot be trained. I know, I have one. I’m no stranger to training animals either. I trained my first dog to follow my hand signals to the point where I could hide a ball of her, and through hand and voice commands I could direct her to it, even when it was up to 50 yards away from me… I have also trained several lizards so that they would be comfortable around people. Heck, I had my old cat trained to come when I called him. The one I have now, no dice. Luckily, he isn’t into scratching the furniture, just my hand.
As far as the declawing issue goes, I had no idea that it was such a hot button topic. I have known several indoor cats who were declawed, and were perfectly happy and healthy. I have to say, I really don’t have a problem with it. Simply from my personal experiences, it seems that cats who have undergone this procedure are not “messed up” or unhealthy in anyway. Of course YMMV.

And what about the nerves (yes, nerves - not nurves) that are cut when neutering a cat? I would think the nerves at the testicles or throughout the abdominal cavity are greater and possibly more sensitive than the paws.
