U.S. ASIANS SEEN AS ‘ALIEN,’ STUDY FINDS
Ethnicity: American culture is not fully accepting, though bias has
declined, report says.

By K. CONNIE KANG,
Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

Open hostility and bigotry against Asian Americans may have declined
since World War II, when Japanese Americans were incarcerated as
security risks, but the nation’s estimated 11 million people of Asian
ancestry still cannot escape being perceived as “foreigners,” a
far-reaching public policy report released Wednesday says.

Am I the only one who that that **Kingship** wrote in a manner very close to Gene Ray of timecube fame? I couldn’t even get mad at what he was saying if I wanted to. I couldn’t get past his style.

> How does this mean that the majority of whites hate Asians?
> And does this mean that it’s right for you to be as hateful as you’ve been? \*\*

I don’t believe that I ever said that the “majority” of whites hate asians. Maybe only 25% do, I remember a UCLA study that polled 1 in 4 americans as showing suspicion or distrust towards asians. However, I would be willing to say that even if only 25% are actually racist towards asians about half or the majority of whites will remain complacent in the face of this anti-asian racism.

This reminds me of an incident that occurred to me when I was young. I was with in middle school (around 12 years old) and I was in a store with my friend (who was white.) We weren’t doing anything besides browsing video games and minding our own business. The store manager was incredibly rude to me and then said something about asians not belonging in the u.s. or some other disparaging comment along those lines. This was a majority white populated state I was in. In that store were other people of course and i’m sure several heard the comment since he said it pretty loud. Noone said anything and my friend even seemed embarassed to be around me as if ashamed that he realized i’m drawing attention because of my race. At the time I didn’t say anything to defend myself since I was shocked this adult said that to me. I left and put it in the back of my mind.

This is just one example of the many years of shit i’ve endured in this country. I’ve since learned to fight back aggressively and without any type of compassion against those that seek to denigrate me because of my race. I’ve broken faces, kicked in car doors, and been convicted of assault. I’m not afraid to admit any of that but what I won’t ever do again is roll over for anyone without a damn good fight. And I will make sure I win at _ANY_ cost.

To be honest, if I could expatriate myself back to the homeland I would. I don’t feel like i’m a part of this society i’m only here because it would cause my family undue hardship to pick up and move. Even though I was born and raised in the U.S. that’s the truth I would leave if I had the money and opportunity to do so. I don’t feel comfortable in this nation that never saw me as one of its own. I did try to integrate at one point but compromise is over.

Speaking from a country where we have surveys published saying most folk in main urban centres say there is too much Asian immigration – and then a right-wing, anti-open immigration politician rises to the fore with rhetoric he should be damned for – I think I can see **FeistyMongol’s** point. At least that he posed in the thread where this one sprang from.

I can’t speak regarding the situation in America, not being an American resident, but here in New Zealand what I’ve seen is this: Asians, whether Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Hindu, Moslem, whatever, are not accepted as anything other than “that other race”, unless they are married to whites, act and talk like Europeans (become “un-Asian”), or entertain us. I’ve heard people use words to describe new immigrants that has made my skin crawl: describing, in derogatory fashion folk that work hard to make this country work, that buy homes, bring up kids as we do.

And still the anti-immigration politicians rant and rail, getting their backs up when _they’re_ accused of being rascist, fascist, and all the rest. Thus far, from what I know, everyone here is equal in the eyes of the law. Unfortunately, that’s only if they manage to get here, and don’t falter at the gate because they can’t speak English well enough to suit us Kiwis. ☹

Just my tuppence-worth.

My Japanese girlfriend has described precisely the same things to me, from Hollywood representations of Asians to Asian male/female sexual stereotypes to day to day mistreatment and abuse. I have to agree with **Maeglin** here. FTR, I am not Asian. But my freshman year of college, I lived in an Asian/Pacific Islander Culture-themed dorm. We had a lot of discussions and dorm-sponsored events on how Asians are seen by the American society at large, and I really felt that my eyes were opened to a caricature I’d never noticed before. My best friend is Chinese-American, and I’ve discussed these ideas with her, and she agrees - she definitely gets pigeonholed as a sweet, quiet China doll (she’s not quite five feet tall, which probably makes this worse). This stereotype is, of course, completely unlike her actual behavior. When we go out, I have to elbow her constantly so she’ll stop swearing so much when we’re around kids.

I still don’t get how Margaret Cho embodies a stereotype.

You see… Bad stuff happens to all kinds of people. And only a fool would assume that people kill and hurt one another because of their race.

People kill and hurt one another and claim race as a factor are just BAD PEOPLE who’re looking for something to pin their desire to hurt others on.

“He’s gay and smiled at me!” “He’s black and rode on the front of the bus!” “She was dressed like a whore, your honor. She was obviously asking for it.”

You see… these people who kill other people are sick.

Should I carry a gun and live in fear because so many women are raped and killed every year?

Should I bring this up in conversation, often implicating that simply being male is enough of a red flag to make me distrust you and expect you to ridicule, belittle, rape, or kill me?

Guess what? No. No, it’s not.

From [this](http://now.org/issues/violence/stats.html) site:

> [@](#):
>
> Every day four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence, the euphemism for murders and assaults by husbands and boyfriends. That’s approximately 1,400 women a year, according to the FBI.
>
> * * *
>
> Although only 572,000 reports of assault by intimates are officially reported to federal officials each year, the most conservative estimates indicate two to four million women of all races and classes are battered each year. At least 170,000 of those violent incidents are serious enough to require hospitalization, emergency room care or a doctor’s attention.
>
> * * *
>
> Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It’s estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year 1.2 million women are forcibly raped by their current or former male partners, some more than once.

Now tell me again how scary it is to be an Asian male in America, Feisty.

And make me believe it.

If the “homeland” is China, Japan, Taiwan, or Korea, I’m afraid that Feistymongol might be in for a bit of a shock. China Guy might know how things are in the mainland better than I do, but from what I’ve seen in Taiwan, “huaqiao” (overseas Chinese) aren’t readily accepted as “just one of us”. Unless you’re rich, I can’t see a Taiwanese family approving their daughter marrying you–especially if you’re functionally illiterate. If you don’t know the language fluently (i.e., reading and writing), you’ll be regarded as a foreigner for all practical purposes. _Then_ you’ll find out what it’s like to be discriminated against–usually not in an overtly hostile way, but more in the sense of “why don’t you go back to where you belong”?

And if it’s Korea or Japan, then from what I’ve heard firsthand–forget about it. You’ve grown up tainted by a foreign culture and no matter how well you speak the language, you’re a gaijin now and forevermore. (Sorry, don’t know the Korean word for foreigner.)

That is supposed to be an example of white people “supporting” anti-Asian racism? You are either really young or you don’t pay much attention to the way the world works.
Our whole society operates on ignoring or avoiding rude behavior. Had the manager picked on your size, your clothing, your speech, or the way you wore your glasses–and were you a poster boy for the Aryan Nation–he would still most likely have been unchallenged. You can rail against the apathy of this society or against the tendency of people to allow rude people to get away with offensive behavior, of course. However, to use that as an example of _racism_ simply demonstrates that you are blainded by your own prejudices.

As for going around violently attacking people whom you perceive to be insulting (just as you blasted into the other thread with more violence than sense), you are simply hurting your cause.

There are definitely xenophobic and stereotypical attitudes displayed toward East Asians (along with a grocery list of other peoples) in the U.S. However, your absolutist pronouncements and violent outbursts do nothing to eliminate negative attitudes.

It would seem, however, that just as with the “oh, we poor endangered white folks” of the National Alliance, you are having more fun continuing the cycles of hatred and ignorance. Your choice, of course, but I suspect that you will one day regret it.
(And, as **Doghouse** has pointed out, if you want to experience _real_ xenophobia, try several of the Pacific rim Asian countires. Each that I know of has the same sort of disdain for perceived “lesser” peoples within their own country and most have a general xenophobic attitude for persons born elsewhere that matches or exceeds anything that the U.S. can provide.)

\*\*

I don’t go out of my way to “hang” out with different races either. It just so happens that I have good friends from a wide cross section of “racial” groups. Most of my friends know my point of view when it comes to anti-asian racism and they respect it. Maybe my points seem heavy handed on a forum such as this but I get my points across better in real life.

I never said I didn’t like them but comon’ it’s hong kong action kitsch. The only reason some U.S. audiences are fascinated with it is because of the over the top violence. There is no message in those movies it’s just a spectacle. I’m impressed when an American audience watches an asian drama and can appreciate it. If some white people can relate on a human level to asians then it’s different.

\*\*

Ang Lee and Wong Kar wai have probably done more for Asian cinema than any other directors. Both of them have shown asian life devoid of the common kitsch and stereotypes Hollywood forces on our image. I suppose Kurosawa has made real asian films too but his movies are more historical epics.

Look, the fact is if an asian man was saying the same things people would be plotting to kill or harm him the next day. Or he would be ridiculed and disregarded by the masses. In some ways the only reason why Cho is heard at all is because she’s a bit of a caricature. She hops and skips and makes the audience laugh at her funny ethnic jokes. However, at the end of the day it’s how many people’s views you change in the end that matters. Humor MIGHT do it for some but for the majority it’ll be forgotten as “entertaining” material but nothing really important to consider.

That sucks however that’s hollywood and its corrupt casting couch practices. It has nothing to do with asian-americans.

Where did I ever list “acceptable” careers? I think it’s great she’s a comedian but don’t ever pretend she’s tackling serious issues regarding race in a coherent manner. I called her a caricature because that’s what she is. People go there to laugh with her and in some cases at her but in the end it’s just done for comedy. Maybe she is serious about it but the audience will only relate on a very base level.

You know it’s hilarious you’re trying to talk down to me about this assuming i’ve never been overseas back to the homeland before. Yeah i’m just “one of them ignant orientals who doesn’t know how good he has it here!” Bullshit. I’ve lived overseas as a student during college for a long time. I even visited japan for a few weeks with a friend. Out of all of those countries I never felt directly “out of place” or had anything rude said to me considering my overseas status. Oh please. I know plenty of americanized Japanese people that went back to live in Japan for a few years at a time. There is even a growing expatriate community of Brazillian Japanese. Not a single one complained of anything besides odd questions concerning where they came from originally. Not of it was virulent malicious racism like i’ve experienced in the U.S. Don’t even try to play this comparison game because your shit won’t fly with someone who has actually been there.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha

Ya, go repatriate yourself to a country where you don’t speak the language in a native fashion and when you grew up in another culture, and then come back and tell us about prejudice and racism. You’re an American born and raised here. One way plane tickets from the US to most major destinations in Asia go for less than $1,000. You can probably scrape up the money, the opportunity is up to you, so the “truth” about leaving if you could sounds like empty boasting to me.

I doubt if anyone on these boards would say that there is no racism against Asians in America, nor would they say that you haven’t encountered racism in America. You know, maybe even I have some personal experience with racism against Asians in America. But I don’t buy your arguement that whitey has this giant conspiracy to keep Asians down.

😃
oh here we go again. You don’t even know me and you’re making generalizations of what I do or don’t know. I’m American born but I speak fluent mandarin. How about them apples? Bet you never considered that fucknuts.

Also, I currently have obligations here (which i’ve stated before) which prevent me from just uprooting and leaving on a whim. It’s not just a matter of buying a “plane ticket” as you so simply put it. I’m sure you know this too. Your entire response reeks of cultural bigotry. I’m sure you’ll still claim that i’d be far more “oppressed” there even though I have lived overseas a substantial amount of time to know better. You’re playing the comparison game in an attempt to justify or even trivialize white racism in the U.S. so you put down asian societies in a similar manner. That game doesn’t work with me, boy.

You know, maybe even I have some personal experience with racism against Asians in America. But I don’t buy your arguement that whitey has this giant conspiracy to keep Asians down. \*\*

You probably refuse to “buy” it because in order to do so would force you to realize some very ugly truths about your supposedly utopian American society.

No, but I once heard of an Asian fish that played the ponies.

It’s called willfull complacency it’s what the Germans practiced to allow the Nazi regime to flourish. Maybe you’re the one that’s too young to remember or pay attention to the way the world works.
Maybe you classify racism as merely “rude” behavior but it goes beyond that.

However, to use that as an example of _racism_ simply demonstrates that you are blainded by your own prejudices.

Oh you mean being told that I don’t belong in the U.S. (at the time I very much thought of myself as American) and other derogatory comments is an example of ME being blinded by my own prejudices? HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Do you blame the woman after she gets raped too?

What would you know of my fucking cause?

You mean after I cracked that guy’s head open like an egg he didn’t stop being racist? Maybe not but he certainly thought twice about it next time i’m sure.

Each that I know of has the same sort of disdain for perceived “lesser” peoples within their own country and most have a general xenophobic attitude for persons born elsewhere that matches or exceeds anything that the U.S. can provide.) \*\*

Oh here we go again the much often used cultural bigot comparisons where you go on to state how asian nations are so much worse. Yes, what was I thinking! the U.S. is truly a utopian paradise, damn I guess all that racism and those fights I experienced were just a part of my imagination. Despite, the fact i’ve lived overseas (in several asian nations) for a few years and know what it’s like.

I’m fucking enlightened now dude!

You keep whining about all the assumptions that everyone else is supposedly making while fighting nothing but strawmen, yourself.

One way to avoid actual discussion, of course, but pretty bring as your soulmates from the National Alliance use the same tactics when they drop by.

(Can you actually point to any post that claimed that the U.S. is some sort of utopia or that discrimination does not exist? Or are you so busy flailing around with your head in a bag of self pity that you cannot actually engage in serious discussion?)
