# 'Fess Up: Do You Sing to Your Pet(s)?

Over in the **[Silly Little Things That Bring You Joy](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=586640)** thread, it has come to light that several of us sing to our pets – usually in the form of making up new, pet-related lyrics to existing songs.
Examples:[ul]
[li]“Bailey dog, my Bailey dog…” (to the tune of “Baby Love”)[/li][li]“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray; you’ll never know, dog, how much I love you…”[/ul](There are much better examples in the other thread, but I don’t want to copy/paste without the posters’ permission; hopefully they will re-post their masterpieces here.)[/li]
Many of us can’t believe that we have admitted to this behavior on a public message board, yet we feel oddly unburdened – and happy to learn that we’re not alone. So, it’s time to 'fess up: do you sing to your dog(s)/cat(s)? If so, what? 🙂

As I just posted over there - I often sing to my boyfriend like that. I don’t know what that says about me, but it’s a silly sing-song thing we do. And sometimes it’s purposefully off-key and pointless, like a little kid would sing.

In my defense, she’s far more sensible than most right-wing talk radio.

I have orchids that are more sensible than most right-wing talk radio.

Yes, I sing to my cats, even though I have a terrible singing voice. Mr. Neville listens to bluegrass shows on internet radio, and one of them often plays a song that contains the phrase, “Little cat, little cat, don’t you cry”. I sometimes sing that to the cats.

Some time ago there was a commercial, for yogurt I think, with a song that goes "You’re my little fluffy one. My fluffy, wuffy one that makes my mouth go yum’. For months I couldn’t help but annoy my Maine Coon by picking him up and, in my best Chevalier voice, singing “your ma leetle floofy juan. Ma floofy woofy juan that make ma moth go yom”. I also like to sing “Stray Cat Strut” to him. I think he likes the sound (vibration?) of my voice when I do the opening “mmmmmm mmmmmm mmmmmmm mmmmmmm” part.

I just sing encouraging potty songs when Captain takes his damned sweet time outside and it’s cold. In another thread I mentioned my pop masterpieces “My Girl Wants to Potty All the Time” and “Fight For Your Right to Potty”, but we also have “Potty Like It’s 1999” and “It’s My Potty And I’ll Cry If I Want To”.
The boyfriend makes up much more elaborate lyrics to sing to the animals. To the tune of “Unwell” he’s got this really long song he sings to our second cat, but all I can remember is “I’m not Dewey, I’m just a little fat cat - I’m orange, and my name is Edison!”
Yeah, we hope the neighbors don’t notice.

Wow you guys all have awesome pet songs!
I don’t sing to my dog too often, and if I do it’s not a clever made-up song like you guys do. Mostly, I sing to her when it’s storming outside because I’ve run out of things to try to make her calm.
And, I could never think of any kids songs on the spot (I felt I needed to sing kids songs) so I started signing songs from Sunday School to her. Now I’ve decided that my dog likes songs about Jesus, and that’s just about all I’ll sing to her (I’m not particularly religious).
