Under the guise of “fire dept” does our full time public safety officers recieve these men’s entertainment magazines. I know because they are in the inboxes at city hall where I work. In plain view to all who pass by.

I strongly suspect in the real world that this is not cool, to have entertainment magazines sent to work. Be it Good Housekeeping, ladies Home Journal, Victoria’s Secret catalogs, Playboy, penthouse or car and driver, none of these are work related so I doubt they should be sent to City Hall!

Frankly it pisses me off, sure bring in your fetish magazines from home and put them in the private cop lounge or in the men’s room where they are handy for relieving that stress of working the beat in a small town. ( woman on the beat Ha not this town not this century!)But to have them delivered directly to city hall, is outrageous!

Does this also mean one can view these mags online now while at work? The Treasurer of the city just chuckled when I showed him!

What do you think?

I’m just curious:

Is your main source of outrage that they are having non-work related magazines delivered to City Hall? If these were, as you say, Good Housekeeping, Car and Driver or Sports Illustrated, could we expect an equal amount of outrage?

That either you don’t know what the word “fetish” means, or that you’ve never looked inside either Maxim or FHM.

If your FD is like our FD, the employees work shifts of 48 or more consecutive hours, living in the fire station. If that’s the case, I don’t see why a magazine or two is out of line, no matter where it’s delivered.

And really… based on the magazines we used to find in the fire station when I was in Scouts (our troop was sponsored by the local fire station), you should be happy it’s just Maxim and FHM.

We used to find Playboy, Penthouse, and much harder stuff in the bathrooms frequently. Made troop meetings much more interesting, that’s for sure!

They’re also in plain view of all who pass by any news stand or supermarket magazine rack. What of it?

My workplace gets “entertainment” magazines delivered by the truckload. There’s a stack of them in the breakroom, free to whoever wants them. We’ve got advertising in most, if not all, of them, which is why we end up with so many free copies. Maxim is a regular, so’s FHM. Haven’t seen a Playboy yet, but there have been Hustlers in the mens room on occasion.

Okay, first, “fetish” magazine? Are we still talking about Maxim here? Second, why is having these magazines in city hall “outrageous”?

I don’t know, does it? Speaking for my workplace, I know the answer is “yes,” provided it doesn’t interfere with you doing your job. From your treasurer’s reaction, I’m guessing the same goes for your office. So what?

I think you’re having a very big freak out over a very small issue.

Is the city paying for the magazines? If so I can understand your frustration. If it’s just that people are buying their own subscriptions and having them delivered there, then I disagree with you.

I don’t think it even matters if the city’s paying. Keeping these men from being bored to death while spending a few consecutive days at the fire station (assuming that’s how it works there) is just a good idea. The city probably paid for a couch too, and maybe even a TV. What of it?

If the city’s paying for strippers, maybe I could get myself all angried up at the waste of public funds. But magazines?

How does the mail work there? If it’s like the city hall I worked at, all the mail arrives in a bin, and one person sorts through it every morning and puts the letters into the right people’s cubbies for them to pick up afterwards. If the airbrushed boobies are offending your prudish tendencies, how about telling the mail guy that he should take those magazines straight to the department, bypassing the cubby entirely?

There really should be an English gay review called “Chaps in chaps” somewhere 🙂

Speaking from experience, I can advise that it is not a really good idea to order something from Victoria’s Secret (in this case, a totally respectable sweater) to be sent to your workplace so as not to clue in your beloved that a gift is forthcoming.

VS will put you on their mailing list, assuring that you receive catalogues. Many, many catalogues arriving in the mail for you, provoking a certain amount of amusement among your colleagues. Some of the catalogues may well arrive with the cover mysteriously missing, leading you to wonder about the professionalism of those working in the mailroom. :dubious:

Peeps it is about respect and appropriateness.

If what’s good for the fire dept should be good for the rest of us, what’s next? WHat would happen if soft porn was sent to other departments? economic development, zoning, DPW, transit, can a reasonable person take this practice to mean that any published glossy,(even if your fetish is nekkid lousy hags)is a-ok?

Remember this is city government, not exactly a PR firm or the waiting room for a jock doctor.

Convince me soft porn is a suitable subscription for city hall

Playboy is soft-core porn. Maxim and FHM is bikini modeling. I guess Sports Illustrated is soft-core porn as well by your criteria.
