Looking at it with the OP’s original literary intention: Alec Guinness as Fagin in “Oliver Twist” Colin Firth as Darcy in “Pride and Prejudice” (pant, pant) W. C. Fields as Mr. Micawber in “David Copperfield” Lawrence Olivier as Richard III in the movie of the same name Looking at it from a pure acting standpoint: Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates in “Psycho” Charlie Chaplin as the Tramp in anything Gloria Swanson as Nora Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard” ---

Another vote for Brett as Holmes, and the first for Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker. Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster. Still hard to picture Stephen Fry as Jeeves, but Laurie is forever typecast. Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh as Beatrice and Benedick, also Branagh as Henry V. ---

Robin Williams as TS Garp, and Glenn Close as Jenny. Robert Carlyle as Begby (sp?) in “Trainspotting”. Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. And I’m kinda looking forward to Jim Carrey as The Grinch. ---

Just a couple more: Rosalind Russell as Auntie Mame Leo McKern as Horace Rumpole don Jaime: I thought Stephen Fry was perfect as Jeeves. He and Hugh Laurie really nailed the characters. I always see/hear them when I read Wodehouse. Rilchaim: I haven’t seen enough of Viggo Mortenson yet to picture him as Aragorn. Unless they have a new trailer available, I don’t remember that they really showed much of him. But I’va also started seeing Cate Blanchet as Galadriel.
