That reminds me of an article I read a while back about the unique fan culture at FC St. Pauli (a German club which has made leftist politics a central part of their brand). It mentioned that most St. Pauli fans also support Bayern (St. Pauli usually isn’t in the first division). It seemed odd that these radicals would support a rich club from a conservative region, but with this context it makes sense.
The anti-fascist stance may be a factor in the fan friendship between St. Pauli and Bayern, but Uli Hoeneß and Bayern also once saved them from bankruptcy. I told the story a few months ago in the omnibus football thread:
I know the concept of a second team and also have one, Schalke 04, probably because it’s my dad’s team. I also have strong sympathies for St. Pauli, for the same reasons like yours, they probably have the most non-toxic fan culture in the (male) football world. Only for the rest of this season I’m rooting against them, because they are one of Gladbach’s main rivals in the battle against relegation.
