Goalie is fine. Anyone that polices languages about field vs pitch or jersey vs kit or penalties vs kicks from the spot or any of that isn’t worth worrying about.
As an Englishman I should be indulging in a little schadenfreude at Germany’s shootout loss (now you know how it feels (fifty years ago notwithstanding)!!, but I have to say, I feel sorry for them. That disallowed goal was a complete joke. If that was defender on attacker there isn’t a chance in hell that would be given as a penalty. Not in a million years.

Yes but this gets us into the inconsistent rules of how fouls are called. Goalies are hot lava, fouls against attackers need to be more clear cut in the penalty box than elsewhere on the field, and players off the ball can do almost anything to each other.
I think it should have been a goal, but I’m more like 80:20 or maybe even 70:30 on it. The BBC commentary was saying Gill deliberately went to ground. I don’t find that plausible at all.
I think there was a bit of argy-bargy and the question becomes how much is enough to warrant a foul? Probably a lot more than this.
Thanks mate, but this was the third catastrophic WC for us in a row, so by now I have given up hope it will get better some time. Of course now, everybody here wants to have Nagelsmann fired and is crying for Jürgen Klopp as new coach. Maybe it was even better to lose this in penalties than to get a beating from France in the next round.
At least NL are also out, so they can’t make fun of us.

I was just thinking about that the other day during the usual argument with Mrs. Thumper. I reckon I have time for another 2 WC tournaments. 3 might be pushing it. Upon having that thought, I regretted not making more of an effort to get tickets. At least I got to do some translation work at the '94 tournament, but I was too young to appreciate what I was seeing.
I have to admit that I was a bit fatalistic, I’m 58 and my father is 90 and still going strong, but the chances I will get as old as that are slim, I have coronary heart disease, yet still smoke like a chimney, drink too much wine and practically don’t move at all. At least I eat well and am not overweight. Let’s see how many WCs I still have in me…(and thinking about this, do you all also divide your lifetime not only into years, but in World Cups?

Yeah, we are, and that’s how it’s felt and experienced in football nations like Argentina, Germany and many others. It may sound ridiculous, but WCs can be traumatic events for the psyche of whole nations. Or the other way round, can lift the national spirit for years.
Yes, and it’s not good to be on a national team that underachieves in a WC.
