FIFA World Cup 2026 - discussion etc

We could’nt not be there my friend, gabachos out and La perfida Albion too, the world cup Habla Español!

I think someone said that this is the first time the South American Champions will face the European Champions in the final. We will see how it goes.

Not true, but it’s a common misunderstanding. The captain has no special privilege or authority, and any player may speak with the referee.

When matches go to Kicks from the Mark, first the teams ‘reduce to equate’, which means that if either team has more players on the field at the end, whether because of send-offs or injuries, that team must identify the appropriate number of players who will not partipate in KFTM. If it’s all square after five shooters each, the teams continue until one team makes and the other team misses. All eligible players must shoot before any player takes a second shot. I once worked a game where a goalkeeper stopped a shot (from the opposing 'keeper), then stepped up and buried the winning shot about 30 seconds later.

This - either it was REALLY bad strategy or they ran out of steam.

I don’t think they ran out of steam, normally no national team of that class does after 70 minutes, they just chose the false strategy of only defending and not pushing further for a goal of their own. And thus were defeated deservedly.

I wonder if there will be any repercussions for some of the Argentine player for waving a banner relating to the Falklands / Malvinas
Political signs are generally a no no and I am not sure if they were just angled at Argentine supports , but that could be taken to be provoking the England fans which I think is also a No no. Hopefully no fans did anything stupid.

Who am I kidding , no there won’t .

One of my favourites is Portland - KC from about 10 years ago. Went through the full 11 and featured an amazing double-post miss that would have ended things.

I also thought England were knackered because they didn’t seem to have the same urgency to get to the ball, but you’re right, any player at that level and in that situation had better be able to sack up and do as he’s told. Which means it was a tactical failure on Tuchel’s part. With all those diagonal crosses flying in, it was inevitable that Argentina would score.

Maybe they thought they were playing Mexico again.

The brain of that coward Tuchel needs scientific study.

If I were English I would be so angry with him.

FIFA fined them $20,000 in 2014 for the same thing. Since the fine seems meaningless to them maybe they should red card the team and make them play with 10 players.

His next strategy is going to require some form of isolation. Maybe a stay on the space station.

Personally I am not necessarily against halftime shows but world football halftimes are 15 minutes regardless of what other sports do. No reason to change. If that means no halftime show then so be it.

Well, not any reason not to change, either. I’m sure in the minds of broadcasters, there is a good reason to change. That being, more chances for commercial spots.

But yeah, I do understand. I’d be miffed if they extended the breaks between periods in Stanley Cup games because dolla dolla bill, ya’ll. But I wouldn’t come up with weird theories to explain why I was miffed.

Any player may speak to the referee but the ref actually listens to what captains have to say. Others may just be told to shut up and get far away from him.

I read somewhere that they’re no longer called “kicks from the penalty spot” which is a shame because it’s really silly to call them penalty kicks or penalties considering they have nothing to do with fouls or a chance to score a goal.

It was nice to see you refer to them by a sensible name.

Messi could pay any fine off with money he found down the back of his sofa. I’m sure FIFA will do nothing about it. Before we knew England were playing Argentina I said I wasn’t bothered by them. Last night, particularly in the first half, their antics really got under my skin though. I hope Spain completely batter them. Despicable team.

If someone was sent off for the flag thing today why would Argentina have to start the final with only 10 men?

Also, how do you red card a team? Do you mean show a red card to every member of the team?

Does that mean that I shouldn’t post images of the celebrations? I did last time, but I don’t want to generate animosity, truly, the Dope is my second home.

No please feel free (not that you need anyone’s permission). My annoyance is directed at the team and the tactics they clearly don’t need to use (in the second half when they tried to play football they played us off the park).
