Exactly.
But getting to be host of the WC again really is not a priority in German sports politics, rather getting the Olympic Summer Games.
Having multiple hosts seems to be in fashion. Just start rotating through the federations. All of Europe, all of South America, all of Africa, etc.
Germany has nine neighboring states. It could be them and all those neighbors.
It would have to be something like that yes, but it’s too logical, rational and simple for FIFA.
You mean there’s not enough bribe money
I didn’t want to be so explicit ![]()
Qatar for sure. Did the USA-Mexico-Canada selection come from bribes?
If not bribes other impure motives surely weighed in.
And then they allow the U.S. to refuse to receive a team, a referee, a fan base. generally sucking up to Trump…, let’s say FIFA is not covering itself with glory, even to their admittedly very low standards.
You do remember Trump’s FIFA “Peace Prize” no?
There hasn’t been any decision by FIFA, UEFA or IOC for game hosts without bribes, ever. I can’t prove it, but I’m sure.
It’s important to remember that corruption is a 2 way street. At the time North America was selected for 2026, FIFA was in the midst of a huge corruption scandal and needed the appearance of legitimacy. Trump was at the end of his first term. IMHO if the Trumps and FIFA are involved, there’s also corruption involved. FIFA inventing a “Peace Prize” to soothe Trump’s wounded ego pretty much confirms it for me.
Not that I think FIFA is squeaky clean, but if they did act with purely unselfish motives, choosing a host that they truly believed would conduct the tournament for the best experience of the players and fans, where would that be?
As for bribing Trump, isn’t it supposed to be countries bribing FIFA, rather than the other way around?
The “FIFA Peace Prize” was created and presented seven years after the selection of the three* North American countries was made, and at a time when it was not expected that Trump would be president in 2026.
* Or four, if you like Risk and count Greenland.
That’s what I mean when I say corruption is a 2 way street. People who take bribes are also inclined to offer them, and bribes aren’t only cash. In 2020, both FIFA and Trump needed a win.
Because of the 2015 scandal, in 2018 FIFA decided to delay the selection until 2020. The “Peace Prize” was conceived to coincide with the draw for 2026 - after Trump had been elected and was crying about not being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.
And unless there was a time machine involved, it was irrelevant to the selection of the United 2026 bid, though you seemed to put a causal link between the two in FIFA World Cup 2026 - discussion etc - #1750 by Thumper668
I agree with not holding the World Cup again in the US. We’ve shown the rest of the world that we’re not cut out for it. But maybe each stadium could host two games per day during the group stage? That would cut in half the number of venues needed, and possibly add to the excitement by having fans from multiple teams in the same place. I think lots of countries could manage 16 stadiums.
Fair enough. In researching the timeline I was looking at this article from 2016:
2026 World Cup hosting vote postponed three years until 2020 - ESPN
It wasn’t a causal link, it was an ex post facto opinion about FIFA sucking up to Trump.
Apparently FIFA corruption is more interesting to everyone than Croatia-Panama.
I’m not going to hold you to that, but we’re on track ![]()
