FIFA World Cup 2026 - discussion etc

Me either. I wouldn’t have brought him on for another 20 if at all. Weah has been the weakest link, though.

Come on Aaronson! At least has to be on goal.

lol you guys know you can’t take a fast corner with the GK down

And now the Turkish keeper is down after a great save to push the ball onto the woodwork and out of play.

US subs come on (Zindejas, Dest and Freeman) and Aaronson, Revna and Scally come off.

Great defending there without incurring a penalty. Glad buddy didn’t dive.

Aaaahh! YES!

Turkiye scores at the death to salvage some pride from this World Cup.

After the most insane nutmeg deke, Turkiye goes up a goal.

My first double ninjaed!

And another door closes for Scotland…

That was awesome. And you could feel it coming half a minute before it happened.

Yeah, US players gave up before Turkiye did.

Still, the US got out of the game with the biggest win of all, no injuries.

After Thursday’s games:

Group D:

United States wins the group.

Australia and Paraguay both advance with four points, Australia finishes second and Paraguay third.

Group E:

Germany wins the group.

Ivory Coast finishes second.

Ecuador advances with four points in third place.

Group F:

Netherlands wins the group.

Japan finishes second.

Sweden advances with four points in third place.

That was the most exciting match I’ve seen yet - and it meant nothing. I feel a little guilty for rooting against my home country - but only a little. (And, yes I’m probably pulling for Bosnia-Herzegovina).

Japan would have liked to win because being second means…Brazil in the knockout round!

Japan got the draw. The Netherlands had already won so Japan finished second and will play Brazil. Japan has to play much better if they hope to defeat them.

Sweden has secured a spot in the knockouts as well, but I believe that their opponent hasn’t been determined yet.

The overall game was pretty boring until Japan scored the first goal and suddenly Sweden came live as they now needed to tie the game to survive.

ETA: ninja’ed. I started the post during lunch before the other posts were there.

Heheh, yeah. Japan has a tough row to hoe after that result. Hopefully they have enough of a goalie to make it work, I’m rooting for them!

Just got back home from the Japan game. One interesting thing that caught my attention was that a whole lot of Japan fans at the stadium, clad in Japan blue, weren’t Asian at all; they were white, black or Hispanic.

Barring a highly unlikely outcome like Japan whipping Sweden by many goals, it was going to be Japan vs Brazil one way or another. I saw one Japanese Redditor complaining how Japan always gets tough draws while Korea gets dealt easier hands every time, and he may have some point.

The only thing that matters is that they cleaned up after the match.

The game against Brazil will be aired Tuesday at 2:00 am, and my son and I will watch it. I’ll have to tell him to keep it down so our downstairs neighbors won’t complain. But only if Japan does well.
