> And it’s not just home renovation shows: Canadian (or part-Canadian) children’s cartoons like Caillou, Franklin, Mike the Knight, Max & Ruby, etc. (which count as Can-con for specialty channels like Treehouse) are also exported to the U.S.

Dig about in those links I posted above, and you’ll find the same applies, plus some special consideration for animation.

> Bottom line: British Columbia is competitive, so it is taking a bite out of Hollywood. It makes me wonder, which is the capitalist nation and which is the socialist nation? I think the USA would do better if it approached issues like this pragmatically rather than ideologically, so as to get their governments working for them and providing a more enticing environment for both corporations and individuals.

Socialist. 🙂

> This is also why _Breaking Bad_ is shot in Albuquerque. The show was originally intended to be set in Riverside, California, but New Mexico offered tax breaks. Of course, in this case, the location has become an integral part of the look and feel of the show.

Location and scenery is another reason Canada gets a lot of filming.
California looks like California- Vancouver doesn’t.

But I think it’s mostly about money.

For TV, California looks like Korea, and for movies California looks like Utah.

Come to think of it, I’ve got it backwards. Most of the world looks like California, as exemplified in thousands of films. 😉

A pretty remarkable state.

“You know what’s remarkable? That England looks in no way like Southern California.” – Austin Powers

I can’t help but think that our lack of a housing crash plays a roll too. We don’t really have a whole lot of people that have been burned in the housing market (recently).
