Could you give us some examples of what you are looking for? Films that should have no sequel could be either because they are very good (and are thus perfect in themselves) or so bad that no one would be interested in seeing the story continue.

I have to admit that I was really surprised when they came up with a sequel to **Beneath the Planet of the Apes**

The movies are over 40 years old, so I ain’t spoilering this.

When you’re blown up the entire world and everyone on it, you’d think that would pretty much prevent any sequels. but, as with Michael Corleone in that Saturday Night Live skit, just when you think you’re done, they pull you right back in.

They somehow or other were able to fix up one of the rockets that had crashed on Future Earth and three apes had flown in it, going inexplicably _back_ in time, rather than forward in time, and landed on then-present-day earth. They got three more sequels

**Escape from the Planet of the Apes
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Battle for the Planet of the Apes**

They used the time-travel thing to explain how super-intelligent apes appeared and were able to lead a revolt against humans. But the sequels still seemed to be pretty pointless and endless.
Actually, you can make a pretty good argument that **Beneath the Planet of the Apes** was a pretty pointless and un-needed sequel, as well.

Shrek, the first one is still a classic. The rest go downhill from there.

Nightmare on Elm Street, Child’s Play. Great movies. all their sequels were a waste of time.

Similarly, the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was great, and I hoped the sequels would be as well, but found all of them disappointing. Better to have left it alone.

**The Pink Panther** series went on forever, even after Peter Sellers’ death.

when you’re reduced to using unused footage of Clouseau from earlier films (_Trail of the Pink Panther_), explaining that your lead character has had plastic surgery and now looks completely different (_Curse of the Pink Panther_), or introducing someone as the illegitimate son of your lead character (_Son of the Pink Panther_), and none of them “work”, it’s pretty clearly time to shut down the series. why couldn’t they simply have someone else play Clouseau, looking the way Clouseau did? – oh, yeah, they did that with Alan Arkin in _Inspector Clouseau_, while Peter Sellers was still alive.
And then, just when you thought that the character had been staked as effectively as Dracula, they rebooted it with Steve Martin in the lead. two more films.

In retrospect, I think I would have been okay with original _Star Trek_ movies stopping at two.

The **Alien** series should’ve stopped with the second, too. **Aliens** was a great flick. No point in having **Alien[sup]3[/sup]** or **Alien Resurrection** or the **Alien v. Predator** movies or the loathsome **Prometheus** series.

As for movies that shouldn’t have had even a first sequel, here are a few:

The Odd Couple

Grumpy Old Men

Oh God!

American Graffiti

The Exorcist (also The Omen, Rosemary’s Baby, Village of the Damned, and any other film that features an evil force and young children)

Psycho

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was going to be about movies that didn’t have any sequels and shouldn’t. Is there any way to change the thread title to, “Films that should have had no sequel…ever!”?

“My” version reminded me of a “category” Roger Ebert came up with: “Movies that make no sense to see more than once.” I think _Gandhi_, _The English Patient_, and maybe _Out of Africa_ and _The Last Emperor_ were examples. Excellent films, yes, but is it worth putting in the effort to watch it again?
