Just saw this on disc yesterday, so it’s fresh in the mind. To me it was a bit like a latter-day Stephen King novel, in that it held my interest for a while and then got progressively more uninteresting. The final scene summed up what was wrong with the film - it just wasn’t necessary and it seemed especially out of place in a fantasy where things are surely not meant to be tied up neatly. I also had almost no sympathy for the son (Billy Crudup). Is the actor naff or is that just me? I also don’t understand why two British actors were cast as Alabamans (is that the right descriptor?). And Jessica Lange was far too young for the part, given that the film suggests she was meant to be around the same age as the Albert Finney character.

Never read a review of it, or even heard of it before my wife’s niece lent us it, so don’t know where it is placed in the pantheon by Ebert et al.

I don’t think I revealed any important plot details, so no spoilers.

Are there really that many annoying fans of snuff films? In any case, I see your Mel Gibson, and raise you a fat _documentary_ maker.

Looks like we got some input on this thread from [Roddy Lumsden](http://vitaminq.blogspot.com/), the Scottish poet/puzzle designer who wrote the original list. Here’s what he says:

With this in mind, I would have to bow to suggestions from others and add The Matrix and Office Space to the list. I didn’t put a huge amount of thought into the list, just asked a few friends. It’s not to be taken too serious, like, but it reflects three factors:
>
> - films which lead people to parrot catchphrases, dance routines and bits of the script;
> - films which are reinterpreted as lifestyle choices;
> - films which are interpreted as having the heady allegorical depths of certain works of art and literature.

I had a bunch of friends who had friends who were rabid Rocky Horror fans.

When the movie finally came out on video, they all got together to watch it and invited me over so that I could bask in its warm glowing warming glow.

I left after 20 minutes.

Now, I’m sure going to midnight showings dressed as a character might be fun - once.

Of course, according to the fans, I just “didn’t get it”. There’s nothing to get. It sucked (IMHO, of course).

It NEEDS to be seen in a party atmosphere. It needs all the help it can get.

More likely he reads his logs and noticed a lot of hits coming from the link in this thread.

**Mr. Blue Sky** , I disagree with your estimation of _The Rocky Horror Picture Show_. It’s a _perfect_ candidate for “the list,” of course, since it’s impossible to watch with a group of “fans” talking over it and screwing up the timing.
