Seriously though, I wonder why you don’t get to mess with the names of the secondary characters? It’s not like they had a bunch of FMVs of people shouting each others’ names.

Several of the characters - specifically Selphie, off the top of my head - get nicknames in the orphanage scene. Selphie’s ‘Sephie’, which makes me giggle since that’s also how I and quite a few people I know refer to Sephiroth.
