Non-canon _Casino Royale_ films:

[The James Bond Film Festival. Part 21: Casino Royale (1954)](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=264712)
[The James Bond Film Festival. Part 22: Casino Royale (1967)](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=312581)

I hope the canon-version will stick to the grittiness of the book. Probably too much to ask, since audiences are accustomed to the Bond gadgets. I prefer the first films where the gadgets were not so outrageous and Bond had to rely on his wits.

[DVD version of the 1967 film](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005JL0I/qid%3D1125414045/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr_11_1/104-2929823-0437551) also contains the 1954 CBS TV version, live TV bloopers and all. Peter Lorre made one of the more infamous goofs in live TV history: Dead Men Do Walk Off Set. It’s not considered canonical though, because, among other things, Bond is a US CIA agent. But still a lot closer to canon than the 1967 film.

> A production of Ian Fleming’s _Casino Royale_, starring Barry Nelson and Peter Lorre, aired on 21 October 1954 as the third production of CBS’s _Climax!_, a Thursday night anthology program which presented a series of live, hour-long dramatic adaptations. The “dead man” glitch occurred in the series’ premiere episode (aired on 7 October 1954) during a production of the Raymond Chandler crime novel, _The Long Goodbye_, as described in a _Los Angeles Times_ article a few days later…

Oh – I did check the _Climax!_ episode on my DVD when I heard this UL. Lorre did not get up and walk away.
