Finally, I can honestly say ... IAAL

Fucking lawyers.

Congratulations, Spoons! You are a lawyer, and you are in my province! Here comes the free legal advice! Woohoo!

Lawyer in training (2L) here. Congratulations!

I remember the thread where you and I both posted that the most satisfying thing we’ve ever done was get into law school. Glad to see you made it through. Nice work.

Congratulations Spoons!

Now he’s gonna have to use TINLAB, an acronym I made up which means “This is not legal advice, but” :stuck_out_tongue:

(Yeah, from what I hear, that isn’t enough to get you off the hook. Disclaimers are good enough for non-lawyers, but apparently not for you guys.)

Anyways, congrats, Dude(tte)!

Hey, congrats! That is not an easy journey, I hope you are very proud of yourself, deservedly so.

Congrats Spoons!!

Congratulations. Will you practice in Lethbridge? What are the areas of law that you focus on?

And now to really important stuff – do you ski at Fernie?

Thanks, folks! Sorry I didn’t get back sooner, but it was a busy weekend–there were a couple of local celebrations in honour of the event. And there was a great surprise that my wife had set up without me having any idea: she made sure that a dear old friend from my days in Ontario was in attendance to help celebrate. It was great to see him again and we spent a lot of time catching up.

As to the type of law that I’ll practice; well, so far, it’s been pretty general–I’ve got a little of everything among my files. Given my druthers, though, I’d like to concentrate on employment law. Other favourite areas include landlord-tenant issues, and matters that involve human rights (many employment issues seem to overlap into the human rights sphere). I did enjoy studying constitutional law in law school, and volunteering in the criminal law area of our school’s legal clinic; but unfortunately, the firm where I’ll be practicing does nothing in these areas. Still, I can keep an eye on doings in these areas, and who knows? I may get the chance to practice them in the future.

We (that is, my wife and I) will be staying in Lethbridge, and I’ll be practicing here. So far, my impressions of the local bar are that it’s fairly collegial–in a small city with a correspondingly small bar, everybody seems to know everybody else, which is nice. And Muffin, I don’t ski; but I can assure you that there are many superb golf courses that keep me busy here in southern Alberta.

Okay, let’s see what my first full day as a real lawyer will be like. Thanks again folks!

Within a few hours of Fernie, but don’t ski? And been made a lawyer? That’s a double whammy to the soul.

Try not to get sued on your first day.

Congratulations, counselor!

Spoons, to keep track of career satisfaction, you should start keeping count of your hugs per day ratio on files that you have sole carriage. You’re going to be able to help make some of your clients’ lives better – some times a great deal better. Do a good job, and every once in a while a client will glom onto you. Forget the money you earn, forget the precedents you help set. The hugs per day ratio is what it all comes down to.

Should your username now be Spoons, LLP?

I think Spoons, Esq. has a certain ring, myself.

No, I won’t be changing my username any time soon. But, Cat Whisperer, your post made me smile.
