My wife just turned on ESPN2. We caught the last 30 seconds of a tabletop hockey championship. And now, Excel eSports. I didn’t know this was a thing. I was ok with not knowing this was a thing. Yet I’ve put my newspaper down to see wtf this is all about. They’re currently modeling a slot machine. ---

I caught parts of it, but unfortunately missed some of the explanation. Hopefully I’ll be able to find it on ESPN+. The parts I caught were way more advanced than anything I can do, but I’m sure that an analyst that works in my dept would have known, and perhaps even used, some of the functions and formulas. But being in his late 20’s, I didn’t want to text him to wake him up to watch. ---

Several years ago, this championship was won by someone who works for my company. He’s in a different country from me, and I’ve never met him, but it was still kind of cool. I don’t think the championships were aired on TV at the time. ---

Perhaps I’m being whooshed, but what I’m seeing in Wikipedia is that [Excel Esports](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excel_Esports) has nothing to do with Microsoft Excel, while the [Financial Modeling World Cup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_Modeling_World_Cup) is all about it. ---

I think you’re just mis-parsing the title. It’s an e-sport involving Excel, not one named Excel. ---

They used the term “Excel eSports”, but yes apparently there is an unrelated organization involved with video games. ---

The title is confusing. “Excel Esports” has nothing to do with Microsoft. ---

And the title also has nothing to do with “Excel Esports”, any more than an apple pie has to do with the company that makes iPhones. ---

The part of the thread title in parentheses is explaining what the Financial Modeling World Cup is about, because the vast majority of people would have no clue. It has nothing to do with the actual name of the competition. ---

Not that anyone who read all the words was confused. * * * Apparently the Excel competition doesn’t actually involve finance. “No finance, just Excel”, which explains my surprise when they were modeling slot machine output. You can buy the .xls they used. But when I checked it was for $0. Maybe to drum up interest.
