Actually, Kempis, as a complete Linux newbie it took me about ten minutes to get Samba set up to transfer files.
The printer sharing, I never did get going.
I think I should explain; I’m not a Linux guy. I’m Windows all the way; even used to work for MS tech support. (ME sucks, by the way.) I run two XP Pro boxes at home, and until my layoff, was a system administrator for 90+ Windows boxes. I have no problem at all with Windows.
But if I wanted to set up, say, my P133 with 128 megs of SDRAM, a 2x CD and a 10 gig hard drive with enough OS to run a web browser and check email, and maybe keep me amused with little games from time to time, I’d break out my Mandrake distro posthaste. Why? Because it’ll do the job, it’s free, and it actually increases the range of programs I can run on my home systems. Because I already have two boxes that can run Windows apps, but I don’t have any way to run all the cool Linux apps that are out there.
Hey… why the heck aren’t I doing that? The bedroom could really use a little system to play music on…
Although I’ve yet to try Mandrake 9.1 (latest out) I believe, from comments made on Slashdot, that if you install cdrecord during installation then drag & drop cd burning is set up automatically for you.
Kempis: Ahh…if you’ve suffered the horrors of old Unix style print system…the CUPS (new system) team are my personal heros and have saved my sanity
Can a Windows 98SE license be re-used or is it one of those new-fangled operating systems that have to activated after installation and can only be installed on one computer?
It can be reused as Win98 doesn’t have to “phone the mothership” to be activated. Even if it did, there are ways around that, if one knows how. (Will not discuss this on the Board, due to reasons of copyright law.)
