I agree.

Any parent that names their daughter this name needs to be spanked. what kind of euro-anglo snob would name a precious widdle one this?

we did. 😃 We are wankers.

Back to **Tremendous** …
**Tremendous Johnson**
Yeah, baby.

Aidan is an okay name, over used though. Hayden, maybe. Kaden, Braeden, etc. I can’t stand.

The number one alltime name of that trend that makes me shudder: Jayden. Something about that name, I’ve only encounter teen moms using it.

I can’t stand Jade. It’s not pretty. It’s a stage name for a stripper or porn star. Same with Sky. And Dakota.

Riley is a dog’s name.

The one right now that makes me go WTF?! is a girl on LJ who named her daughter Clover. It reminds me of _Watership Down_.

LiveJournal is actually a great place to see some out of whack names. Browse some of the pregnancy and parenting communities.

You forgot Kayla, Kaylynn, etc. I can’t for the life of me tell these names apart. I have a six year old cousin named one of these things and I always have to drag Grandma aside before any family gathering and ask, “What’s that kid’s name again?” Maybe I should write it on my hand.

Patsy
Patty
Jennifer
Melissa
Michelle (it may be my middle name, but I’ve never met one I liked.)

I once met a child named Dasani…“spelled like the water” said his proud mother.

[QUOTE=rinni]
Ain’t that the truth. Everyone’s middle name where I come from was either Lynn or Marie.

Guess what my name is?

Right! Lynn Marie.

Could I **be** any more generic?

Four former girlfriends of mine were middle-named Marie. Is _anybody_ under the age of 50 \*first-\*named Marie? I love the name.

I also find Lynn a quietly pretty name for a woman, even more so if spelled Lynne.

[quote]

I ain’t through with you yet, Lynn Marie. Have you considered becoming Lynmarie?

Moving on…Man, there are sure a buttload of Melissas out there. Great, I think it’s a beautifully sweet name. _Melissa._ Only problem is that they seem to be following me around at times. I occasionally stay at Marriott Courtyards, and damned if every time I check in, the woman working the desk is named Melissa. Does Marriott have an aggressively pro-Melissa hiring policy?

I once knew a Lissa. She was going to be named Melissa but Melissa (7 letters) + the family name (6 letters) = 13. No good. So Lissa it was. What a beautiful bedroom whisper of a name: _Lissa._ She was _hot_, too.

Damn! I was congratulating myself on getting through this unscathed. Actually, I always felt it was a blonde cheerleader name, and therefore not very fitting for me. Now I go by Julia, which has an elderly maiden aunt type feel, but since I am slowly becoming a crotchety old bat, I’m cool with it.

Destiny (This is the worst possible thing you could name a kid, IMO)
Brandy (Ferchrissakes, people, don’t name your kids after alcohol!)
Tammy
Taylor
Jennifer/Jenny
Heather
Tiffany
Crystal
Amber
Dakota
Ronald
Tyler
Sky
(The above-mentioned y-ending names are even worse when the “y” is changed to an “i”)

FWIW, my mother hated it when people added a “y” to their kids’ names, i.e. Mikey. So she gave us all names that already ended in the long-e sound. None of them end with an “i” thank goodness. Mine is the only one that hasn’t been mentioned in this thread so far.

Are they of Portuguese decent? Amalia Rodriguez was one of the greatest singing voices of all time.

My granddaughter is a sweet little thing, but my son named her Amberlyn Jayde because he was a Packers fan. I’m still getting over it. 😛

Heh - I’m second on the whitest women’s name list. And yeah, it’s common, but Amy ain’t half bad (yep, I’m biased). However, I loathe pretentious spellings of it - Aimee, Aime, Amie, Aymie, Aymyy, whatever. These piss me off.

My cousins subscribe either to the professions as names, place names, or Wild West names theories. Tanner, Hunter, Wynona, Cheyenne, Cody, Brody, you know the drill. One cousin has the honor of a double-whammy place name, but mispelled: ShyAnne (yes, must include the capitalization). We’ve all wondered what in hell they were thinking - do they not like their daughter? I’m expecting to see a Doctor soon.

Okay I think we have a winner here. Cheyenne is bad enough – pretentious and silly. But to spell it ShyAnne is just inexcusable. That poor girl. She’s going to spend a big chunk of her early life correcting people as they stare at her in horror.

I hope she shucks off the shy part and just goes by Anne. Anne is plain but pretty and dignified with lots of pleasant historical and literary references.

I have seen non-Jewish parents on message boards claim they’re going to name a child Cohen. As in the Jewish last name. Ugh. Leave my religion and culture alone, you halfwits! If you want to honor some great-great relative who just might have been Jewish use an authentic Jewish male name.

Lee, too. All the girls in my class either had Lynn, Marie, Ann, or Lee as middle names. I was one of the few who had something different (Dawn).

Aw ☹

Actually, I’m glad my name has only made the thead once. I avoided opening it because I thought for sure it would be mentioned a lot, since it does seem to be becoming more trendy these days. I _hated_ my name when I was a kid and had a serious grudge against my parents about it. I don’t think I ever met another Brandon until well into adulthood. It seems to have a degree of legitimacy now; it’s unusual enough to set me apart but it’s not unheard of.

I agree that Madison is a dreadful name for a girl. Far too masculine. I mean, the word “son” is right in the name, for Pete’s sake! A lesbian couple I used to live with, and whom I love dearly, named their daughter Madison. ☹

Taylor is also distinctively masculine, IMO. And Hunter? For a girl? WTF? :dubious:

I have a friend whose daughter - whom he freely admits is trash (through no fault of his; she was raised by his ex-wife) - named her daughter Shyann.

The name Caitlin and its permutations make my innards clench. Unbearably hyperfeminine, trendy, and cutesy-foo-foo. (When it’s pronounced Kate-Lynn, that is. I learned right here on the SDMB a few months ago that it’s actually an old Irish name that’s _supposed_ to be pronounced more like Kathleen. Now that I can get behind).

_Wholehearted agreement_ (see my earlier post about Irish names) I always make ‘_kat-leen_’ my ‘default’ attempt at pronouncing Caitlin. If they get offended by this, then it’s definitely their problem.

Belinda

And my grandmother wanted my mom to name me Belinda. Fortunately, mom decided to name me after granny instead.

Oddly, that name hasn’t been mentioned here - I was sort of sure it would be, but I suppose it’s not particularly common so maybe most people don’t think about it too much. 🙂
