The title says it. I just saw this. Fisher Price has a toy for ages 3+. On the box there are a couple little people sitting on bar stools with another little guy behind the bar serving “beer.” It says it includes the bar, stools, and fake beer bottles. Yeah, kids love to play pretend, but didn’t someone in marketing at FP say, I think this may not be the best idea ever? ---

It is somewhat funny when you think about it. Why is the idea of children pretending to be adults in a bar more disconcerting than the idea of children pretending to be other adult roles? Nobody thinks twice if children pretend to be pirates and those guys were actual violent criminals. ---

I was neither surprised at the notion there was such a toy or in discovering it’s just a joke. After all, the toy aisles have had play McDonalds and play Pizza Huts for a long time… and I don’t see that a play bar is any worse. ---

(somewhat NSFW) And c’mon, yeah, a bar for 3 year olds…totally the same as a play kitchen. Yup. That’s like saying that the candy cigarettes we all had when we were little are no different than M&Ms. You can argue about that all you want, but honestly if you honestly thought that Fisher Price is going to make a play bar for 3 year olds, you shouldn’t get to claim all this credibility. Also, no backing out because you said you weren’t surprised that they made it AND you weren’t surprised that they didn’t. There’s a fallacy in there somewhere. ---

I smoked fake cigarettes when I was little. Let them hang out of my mouth so I could look like a gangster, puffed on them, and if I remember correctly, some could make it look like you were exhaling smoke. Even though my parents and just about every adult I knew smoked, I never tried it once. I remember sitting at the bar with my dad, me with my Coke and Dad with his beer, and having a great time. Even though just about every adult I knew drank alcohol, I never picked up the habit. I had half a beer at a party once and a sip of champagne at my wedding when I was toasted. If they had had Fisher Price bars when I was little, I would have wanted it. I can see me sitting there now with my cigarette and pretend drink. ---

I also would’ve wanted the bar if it was real, so I could hang out, have a smoke and a beer to unwind after a busy day of treating patients with my FP doctor kit. ---
