Fleetwood Mac fires Lindsey Buckingham

I don’t think I will miss them much.

This could be the break Peter Green has been waiting for!

In a lot of cases a band is setup as a business and the members get the right to fire anyone , probably by a majority vote. If the band splits up there can also be contract clauses as to who , if anyone, keeps the name.

They told him: Go your own way.

The name is owned by Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. That was settled in various lawsuits from the early 70s, when their then-manager sent out a band that had none of the members in it to tour as “Fleetwood Mac.” Lindsey has no more rights to the name than I do.

And Mick Fleetwood has always been the boss of the group. Even though he never wrote much of the band’s music, he has always been top dog in every edition of Fleetwood Mac. Peter Green and Lindsey Buckingham may have been more talented, but regardless, it’s Mick’s band.

It was Peter Green’s band - he formed it and called it “Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac” with a nod to the Boys as part of trying to be a low-key leader. It became Mick’s band when Peter became a drug casualty, Danny Kirwan was committed and Jeremy Spencer joined the cult he’s still a member of. At that point, Mick had to pull things together.

WHY don’t they put a version of the original band back together? Jeremy Spencer’s still gigging. What kind of shape is Peter Green in?

They could go back to doing quintessential White British Blues. Ahhh, that’d be so nice
(John McVie once said of the reunion idea: If we could get Peter and Jeremy to do it, I’d probably, maybe, do it. I know Mick would do it in a flash.")

And it’d piss off the Soccer Moms who bought an overpriced ticket just so they could have a glass of rosé and hear “Dreams” live.

Peter Green is not in good shape.

Here’s an interview of Mick Fleetwood in the Irish Times before Buckingham was sacked: Mick Fleetwood: ‘Peter Green is the reason there’s a Fleetwood Mac’ – The Irish Times

He talks a lot about how Peter approached leading the band and then how hard it was to lose him to mental illness.

If it were 1977, I would say no.

But it’s 2018 and it’s not like they’ve produced a hit, or anything besides repacks of their old material, since at least the early 2000s. At this point, like many other acts from and before their time, they’re essentially just their own tribute band.

:confused::smack::p:D

To borrow a line from twitter, it feels more like Fleetwood Mac has joined Neill Finn.

Well played sir.

Ah - I didn’t get the reference. Throw me a bone?

This is just one of many.

They’re all spectacular.

there were probably other band members in other groups who were fired but they just said they left on their own.

For example rumor has it Keith Moon was very close to being kicked out of the Who not long before he died.

“You can’t fire me! I quit! By dying…”

Fleetwood Mac has still been filling large venues so I doubt they’ll quit touring soon. More power to them. I was really into them some years ago, but finally, I’d heard “Dreams” and “Don’t Stop” one too many times and I haven’t listened to them seriously for a while. I do hope Lindsey will go on a solo tour. I saw him solo once and he was incredible. I’d love to see him again. He’s pretty good-natured about all the people yelling for him to play “GYOW”.

So now The Heartbreakers are short a vocalist and a guitarist. Hmmm…do you think Lindsey might be interested in filling in?

I really hate to agree with this, but the truth is the truth. I was a serious FM fan, Rumours was one of the albums I got when Santa brought my 1st stereo in 1977 (or might have been 78) and I wore that joker out. Then life went on, I discovered other bands, and then The Dance happened, and suddenly they were fresh and cool again. Me and several friends went to a crap-ton of shows over the next few years and got super into them and solo Stevie again.

And honestly, as much as I love them, I think they need to just go away again and let me remember them as they were. I think they have over toured in recent years, and their sets have grown stale. And Stevie…well I have seen her give a stellar show, and on the flip side I have seen her give a show where she sings two notes on every song. She has one of those voices that can be sublime or horrid. I have seen Lindsey give the appearance of being very sweet on stage, and I have seen him just be a gigantic buttwipe.

They come off these days as old hippies with issues that should have been resolved by now.

Overexposure and too many re-tellings of the same drama has made them boring. And that makes me wanna cry. :frowning:
