FlyingRamenMonster, step on up and discuss your misogyny

Well said. This is exactly what I came in here to post. It annoys me too. A woman protagonist is almost always battling against the mere fact that she’s a woman in addition to the main conflict of the book. If she’s fighting demons/vampires/monsters, then she’s a young, single woman who is also dealing with a lame subplot of falling in love with the enemy or not being taken seriously by her counterparts. And she’s usually “plucky” and has a wry sense of humor. Oh, and of course she’s also stunningly beautiful.

Not being a fan of that type of writing is not misogyny but rather just being annoyed by lazy writing.

I see an opportunity for parody here! Somebody wanna write a book in which the male protagonist is battling against the mere fact that he’s a man?

That brings us back to Philip Roth.

PPPPPfffft!

I am not that crazy about 99% of the female singers out there, I prefer male singers.

And likely for similar “seems to me” and IME reasons as are listed by the OP. I just don’t feel a sense of whatever it is I like most about music coming from female artists. Seems to me, especially in this day and age, that WAAAY too much music from female artists is of the whiny “he’s married and it’s wrong but I can’t help it and love him always” variety.

Does that make me misogynist too? (PS…I’m a woman) .

Please add my name to the selkie == wackjob list.

Oh, no. **Selkie **is not a whackjob, she is very nice, as a matter of fact. Just a misunderstanding here, I think.

Huh? What kind of music do you listen to? I prefer female singers and have a not-small mp3 library and I can’t think of a single song off the top of my head that fits what you just described so I can only guess you listen to some genre I’m pretty unfamiliar with. Country, perhaps? I know there was a not-insignificant number of songs of those types when I listened to it growing up but all the unrequited love songs coming to mind at the moment are sung by men.

And, for what it’s worth, the definition cited above notwithstanding, being a woman does not exempt someone from misogyny. Not that I’m saying you are… that qualifier just kinda bugged me.

Nope. Of course it doesn’t.

waves Hi, Aesiron!

Um what qualifier? (honest question, not sarcasm). Did you mean “I’m a woman also”?

And secondly sorry. Not every song by a female artist that I don’t like is about unrequited love, quick post that I didn’t have time to ellaborate on, my apologies for that.

And darn, you would have to ask me for a title. I have NO idea, I just know them when I hear them and quickly change the station. I’m a big fan of the “scan” and “seek” buttons.

Mostly they’re that R&B type stuff with all the runs, screamy, screechy scales and stuff (horribly grating on the ear to me). Think Fantasia Barino and how every song she did had to have all of those annoying runs! Or Whitney Houston and “I will Always Love You”. There’s another one about “…if this is wrong I don’t wanna be right” but that could be a country song.

But country, yeah, many of the female singers bug me, even though they’re not all about unrequited love. Rock? Like what FRM explained about the female protagonist, it seems that they’re always trying to prove something. Not about being a rocker, about being a FEMALE rocker.

I"m a teen of the 70s. Unlike my fellow girl teens, I hated Pat Benetar and Heart. They just bugged me, it was like they just tried too hard or something. The male rockers just seemed to get out there and purely Rock.

Sorry I wish I could explain it better than that. (where’s the rueful smilie?).

Very early Pat Benetar* was pretty cool. A break from the norm. Then, she turned into Glam Rock, just a female version of it. Yuck.

Early Heart**, tho, was awesome. And for a long, long time. Those girls were musicians, I’ll tell you whut! I used to love seeing in person, as they do things not on their albums that highlighted their own love of music. And then, they too went the Pop route, became Glam (lame) Rock. It’s just that it took them almost two decades to succumb to that evil.

Never, NEVER! disparage early Heart. :dubious:

  • first album***

** all of the 70s to the very early 80s

*** if you remember albums, you know what I’m talking about

Hehe…did you read the part where I said I was a teen girl in the 70s?

I just didn’t like them. No, not even the stuff when I was a teen and a member of their target audience. I know that they are good musicians, so were all the masters, and I don’t like classical at all either. They’re just not to my taste. And I have found that most female artists aren’t to my taste.

Again, I’m not sure why other than the reasons I’m guessing it’s so as in my above posts.

I thought there was the possiblity that their later plunge into the depths of Glam Rock Purgatory was perhaps colouring your faulty memory of the pre-crap stuff.

But, it seems it was simply a matter of tastes after all.

So,
Carry on!

I likes wimmins.

That’s likely my problem, I just prefer the men. I’m all for admitting it’s probably just that some sort of attraction factor (although, Peter Frampton? UUUuuuugggh, I was likely the ONLY teen female of those times who couldn’t stand him even then). The female singers I do like (at least some of their stuff) tend to be the ones who put out great dance songs.

I freely admit to having a very mercenary taste in music. I grew up in a musical family, played instruments and sang throughout school and everything, so while I have the technical knowledge of true “good” music, I don’t care for it all that much.

When it comes to music I’m all about WIIFM , what can I say?

The default gender is male…and the default race is white – right? The default location is usually the West Coast or New York. Or if it took place in the American past, it might be in the West.

It is about an American, isn’t it?

I keep getting tangled up in your words here, but I think that in general, a “whoosh” is a sarcasm or joke that someone makes quite intentionally, but is not recognized as a sarcasm or joke by someone else, who responds as if the original poster was quite serious and is thereby “whooshed” (*whoosh * being the sound of the joke as it flies over his/her head). The original person doesn’t write it with the intent of it being taken seriously, but they *do * write it with the intent of being funny, and generally some degree of hilarity ensues at the point someone doesn’t recognize it as a joke (and is thus whooshed).

Of course, maybe you just whooshed me!

DrDeth, I’m pretty sure the OP was dead serious, and that therefore this pitting was not a whoosh. It was a good try, though, and you should not be discouraged in your quest to recognize humor.

Well, she hasn’t come back to correct any misunderstanding, so the verdict remains: whackjob.

Fuck you, she’s a personal friend and a better person than you.

With all honesty, she doesn’t spend a lot of time on the SDMB anymore and probably forgot about this – she doesn’t spend her time pressing Refresh to see what a bunch of strangers think about her. But I’ll reveal myself as a whackjob to defend my friend if need be.

I came in to say what I felt needed saying, and explained my position in several posts. FlyingRamenMonster came in to say what she felt was appropriate. Beyond that, I truly don’t care, and wouldn’t even if the reality of hamsters + dial-up = minimal time on the SDMB.

She’s probably a great person in many other ways, but frankly, who gives a fuck? Someone who can so casually accuse others of misogyny (especially when they obviously have no actual cause) is a whackjob looking for a fight, and she needs to learn to control that or get used to getting called on it.
