I have spent too much of my career fixing the damage done by incompetent, artless “designers.” When it comes to businesses, too many of them let a sign designer create their initial logo, look, image etc. These abortions tend to be the next thing to permanent.
The only good thing is that I’m finally at a point where I can tell a would-be client that their logo goes, or I go… and I can go. (And if I stay… they get 250% effort from me on a new master logo design, just for having the courage to make a change for the bettter.)
The world would be a better place if sign designers had a median training level higher than the two-day ‘how to run the machine’ seminar, and/or more artistic ability than unemployable laziness.
ETA: I am also a typographic designer who respects type enormously; those who think it’s another malleable element usually come from the less-talented end of the sign-designer gene pool.
Amen!
