i tried to like them… it just washes over me.
So…on that Nirvana tip…here’s a morbid thought :
Without Cobain’s suicide, there would be no Foo Fighters.
Shout out to Cobain for inadvertently creating Foo Fighters
The best Foo Fighters track NOT released as a single :GIMME STITCHES
Foo got them moves like Jagger :
Pff. In a desert of Nickelback clones, FF is a refreshing oasis in straight-up hard rock. They are neither cloning anyone or being cloned.
And if you’ve only really heard their radio singles, you’ve been missing out on their best stuff.
So, “nay” I say, I say “nay!” They indeed do have a non-corporate, edgy sound, as heard on tunes like:
White Limo (Lemmy anybody?), Weenie Beenie, My Poor Brain, Enough Space, etc.
Yeah, I really do have to hand it to Dave Grohl. Guy’s got so much talent. I prefer his work with Probot and Queens of the Stoneage to Foo Fighters, but I just love how he didn’t let the demise of Nirvana get in his way. I would never have known how much musical talent he had otherwise. He never really stood out to me in Nirvana.
I’ve never gotten into any of their music after their debut, but I absolutely love their covers of “Down in the Park” and “Baker Street.” I can’t think of many covers I like more than those two.
I like the Foo Fighters, but I can’t ever seem to get beyond that. The songs I like - “I’ll Stick Around”, “Monkey Wrench”, “Best of You” - I adore. Whenever I try to listen to an entire album, though, it just sounds too same-y and fades into the background. I’m certainly open to acquiring a better feel for their stuff. I just can’t ever seem to do so.
That’s great!
I think my favorite Foo song is “Stacked Actors”…I’ve always really loved that opening riff when the second guitar chimes in.
The one thing I do love about them is their sense of humor. Rock musicians who take themselves too seriously generally annoy me (although there are many exceptions.)
Also on NLTL, Aurora seems to be their most underrated song.
But yeh, Gimme Stiches, Stacked Actors, Breakout, Live-In Skin and M.I.A are all so much better than Learn to Fly which got a mega-ton of radio play. I think Learn to Fly is the only song I skip on that disc, only because it’s so meh in comparison.
Plus, Grohl seems to be everywhere (in a good way). He’s not just some one-dimensional, frontman. Seems like a genuine guy, who really loves what he’s doing, the music he writes and performs, and doesn’t take for granted the fame of being in Nirvana, playing with some of rock’s greatest musicians, filling in on drums for Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D, Them Crooked Vultures, or even simply sending an iPod down along with other provisions filled with his music to those miners trapped in Beaconsfield when one of them declared he loved FF.
Just a good guy who seems to appreciate how good he’s got it. It’s hard not to like a guy like that. Gravy on an already great rock band.
It likely would of happened regardless, Nirvana was on the verge of breaking up. I liked the Foos first album, but after that… snore.
Oh, hell yes. David Grohl is impossible to dislike in my opinion. I may have somewhat opposing views as it comes to the Foo Fighters (“somewhat,” as I don’t hate them or anything), but David is definitely a guy I would love to play with.
Got that bit about the two trapped miners in Australia a bit wrong:
I’ve been hoping they decide to either re-record that album or remix it, since that first album was all Grohl laying down his own tracks, and the mix is really terrible and flat.
Perhaps come 2015, come the 20th anniversary (My god, has it been that long?).
This whole thread is a woosh, right? :dubious:
Why? Because you don’t like them as a matter of taste?
I love the Foo Fighters, I love their Color and the Shape album but also the later stuff that is more ballad-y and then tends to build up to some awesome climax, like Come Alive and Let it Die.
Grohl’s relentless enthusiasm is very contagious. See him play, you can just tell by looking at him that he’s living the dream and enjoying every second of it. When they played Wembley stadium, they got to play with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, and you can just tell that he’s just overwhelmed and exhilarated by the fact that he gets to play with those gods of rock. link
I know! But they just didn’t have the same energy and stage presence that night.
