> Hell, by that standard, the SDMB could be described as a “news outlet”.

"Today, Moderators at the SDMB forced posters to eat a lunch consisting of a live squirrel, cow’s eyeballs, and dirt to comply with directives from Cecil Adams that every poster have a healthy lunch. Claims that Czarcasm was seen covering his mouth with his hands and chuckling loudly in the background and that Miller was seen handing GFactor a $20 bill after Giraffe at the entire lunch in under a minute (“not as bad as a urinal sandwich” he was heard to retort) were unconfirmed at press time.

I believe the phrase you’re looking for is “urinal mint”.

According to the blog which is your own source, three of the four things you just said are not in the law are in the law.

> You’re convinced it was a fiction because someone on a blog said so.

Well, no, just speaking for myself here, I’m convinced it’s a fiction because the department that administers the program in question says it is:
[UPDATE: The North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education has released a statement confirming much of what I wrote above, but also adding some additional clarification. According to the statement, the division has:

“determined that no employee of DHHS, nor the Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) or its contractors, instructed any child to replace or remove any meal items. Furthermore, it is not DHHS’ policy to inspect, go through or question any child about food items brought from home. The facts we have gathered confirm that no DHHS employee or contractor did this.”
A link to a fucking copy of the fucking statement is right fucking there in the fucking article, for fuck’s sake.

Look, I’m as wary of blogs as the next guy, but if a story has citations to back it up, I’m willing to accpet that it is probably true.

If you still believe your’re being lied to, by multiple sources, for some obscure reason, you are free to present some evidence that this is so.

Jesus.

Here’s the thing, you have reality as we adults perceive it, and what a 4 year old girl perceives, which are often quite different.

The adults in charge of the school make a carefully crafted PR statement that they did not tell her “to replace or remove any meal items.”

The child sees an adult tell her that her meal isn’t good enough and she needs to get something from the cafeteria, so she doesn’t eat the “bad food” her parents gave her, and eats a few “good” chicken nuggets from the cafeteria.

Did the child write the article? 'Cause that would explain a lot.

Did you read the article? In full? Because this (particularly the last part):

> [@](#):
>
> Bruce Alexander, director of communications and governmental affairs with the USDA, said Wednesday the person inspecting lunches was a “North Carolina Education staff member conducting a review of the child care center.”
>
> The review, which took place on Jan. 30, was part of the state’s ‘Star Rated’ licensing program, Alexander said. The program is designed to provide parents with a rating of child care centers across the state, including the nutritional content of the meals consumed by children.
>
> “A teacher apparently was nervous during this state review and mishandled the situation,” Alexander said.

does not suggest that there was no swap-out. You are right that they indicated that the parent was not charged a fee. I don’t think that the fee was the gravamen of the complaint though.

Look, I don’t think there’s any nefarious plot by North Carolina to enforce its will on home-packed lunches throughout the realm, although one does wonder why the teacher thought it was appropriate to do this. The worry, of course, is that in the educational profession, norms are developing that favor school intervention in parenting decisions to a greater extent than we wish to accept. Time will tell, I guess.

Yeah, I heard about this same kinda thing happening to a kid in New Jersey. He was in kindergarten or pre-k and his Mother sent him to school with a slice of home-made poundcake with a schmear of jelly for snack time. The Mother got a rather nasty call from the teacher claiming that that wasn’t an appropriate snack!

Oh wait, that kid was,me and I was born in 1963!
Time will tell indeed.

CMC fnord!

Oh, well then, North Carolina. It’s not been long since we took the cigarettes off the school lunch program, and some people have swung too far the other way. It’ll settle out in a couple of oscillations.
