Eggplant
It’s not egg shaped, it’s not white, it doesn’t even remotely resemble an egg in any way, shape, or form. If you called it, say, a “purple squash”, I’d probably at least try it. But EGGPLANT? Bleh, I’ll just have the water please.

> As a name, sweetbreads actually do \*sound \*appetizing. It makes you think of something that’s both sweet and a type of bread (e.g., Hawaiian bread or shortbread). Unfortunately, sweetbreads are neither of these. Now, if this thread was about foods with the most **deceptive** names, sweetbreads would win in a walk.

A sweetbread is a type of meat
That is neither bread nor sweet.
So since it’s neither sweet nor bread
I think I’ll have a bun instead.

That’s racist!

But seriously - some cultivars, especially older ones, are white/yellow. Like [these](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggplant#/media/File:Three_Types_of_Eggplant.jpg).

In addition, Thai and Indian eggplant are egg shaped and roughly somewhere between a chicken and a goose egg in size. The Thai ones are even light in color, about the shade of a white grape.

We say “calamari” since no one would eat it if you called it “fried squid”.

So who decided to keep “pig’s feet” as it is?

From the [wiki page for poutine](http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine):

> [@](#):
>
> In other meanings of _poutine_, the existence of a relation to the English word _pudding_ is uncertain. One of these additional meanings — the one from which the name of the dish with fries is thought to derive — is “unappetizing mixture of various foods, usually leftovers.”
