> Old, old McDonald’s employee here. There were no warming cabinets back in the day, they stayed in the “warming bin”/serving tray and were tossed after 15 minutes if I’m remembering correctly - same as everything else. McD’s, including the franchises, were more tightly standardized on quality control even relative to other fast food venues.

Yeah, I agree, McD’s is good on those times.

I had a Quarter Pounder in Rio, and it was _exactly_ what I expected. Crazy, ain’t it?

> Also why no lettuce and tomato? Because NO McD product had lettuce and tomato back in the day 😀.

I really don’t like lettuce and tomato on a hot sandwich. They get soggy and gross. When a good fresh burger is served to me with salad on top, i quickly remove the salad and eat it separately, as a little side salad, after I’ve eaten the hot burger.

The talk about fast food made me think of my favorite BK item. The rectangle chicken sandwich! It’s not a fancy, real hunk of chicken breast, so I guess it’s inferior in comparison, but I love it. I’m a plain eater so hold the lettuce and mayo but add some cheese. Deee-lish!

> I really don’t like McD’s. I eat a certain amount of what I call garbage food, but I can’t justify spending money – even very little – on McD’s.

Likewise. I hardly ever eat nationally advertised\* fast food but McDonald’s least of all. I’m no angel at the dinner table, just more of a hot dog, taco, & chicken wing fan for fast food and they tend to be local-er. Or I just go up a notch or two (FF to Fast Cas or Grill) and find a Reuben or Nashville hot.

\*1 Anecdote: I stopped at a McDonald’s a month ago while driving across Southern Michigan. I used their washroom and placed an order for a coffee at the greasy touchkiosk. The entire dining room counter is about 5 feet wide and a register takes half of it. I waited for 7? 10? minutes without seeing a single employee emerge, for any reason, like serving orders placed before mine. Other patrons arriving behind me placed orders and went off to sit. In hindsight, they must have been regulars who anticipated that nothing was coming out for a looooong time and I’m a sucker for standing. I bailed without the coffee.

\*2 That same trip, I stopped at a Panera and bought a plain coffee and a plain bagel, no cheese or butter, no toast, no slice. Just grab the cold bagel out of the basket, drop it in a bag, hand me my empty paper cup. This also takes minutes and the coffee station was horrible but the Seven Dollar pricetag is what I really remember.

> The first McDLT polystyrene containers were quite the two part monstrosity - designed to keep the meat warm in the heating bin while somehow keeping the lettuce and tomato from wilting in the same environment by double-insulating them. Bit of a failure, really (though I liked them when fresh).

Alas, no amount of Jason Alexander singing and dancing its praises could save the poor McDLT…

That was during the “burger wars” era of dueling franchise attack ads (i.e. “Where’s the Beef!”). One of the competitors, or possibly some comedy sketch show, put out a very on-the-nose mocking ad which I can’t find. It had increasingly confused looking manager trying and failing to do a commercial pitch “so we put the hot side under a heat lamp to keep it hot and the cool side under a heat lamp to keep it…cool…no wait, so we put the cool side…ummm.”

Like I said I liked them back in the day (probably wouldn’t much now), but they were pretty stupid 😀.
