I’m not sure. Part of me thinks for $1M I could do it, even as a married woman (with my husband’s support, of course.) But part of me wonders if I’d end up bonkers. I’m waaaay introverted, but even I have my times when I want to talk to someone besides the dog, the cat, or the parrot. And that doesn’t even take into account the need for human physical contact, and I’m not even talking about sex. ---

I could do this so easily I wouldn’t think it was fair to take the money. I like people a lot, company is great and there’s plenty of people I like and love in my life. But if I have to occupy my own time, I can, and easily. Given all the good things I could achieve with the million, not just for myself but for others as well, sure I’d do it. It’s an excellent rate of pay for one year. ---

I have always wanted to be “stationed” in the Arctic or Antarctic, just because I find those places fascinating, and mostly still “unspoiled”. Once upon a time, I would have taken that offer in a heartbeat, but no more. I hate it about myself, but I have become very dependent on my wife, so I guess the answer would be no. Not even for a million smackers. Quasi ---

I hope this thread is not too old to resurrect, but the OP just referenced it recently [here](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=546298). My take: hell, yes! I am years behind in my reading. I’d love the chance to catch up on reading, video games, movies, etc. In fact, I’d do it for a lot less money and less affluent circumstances. I spent months on submarines years ago, working my ass off around the clock on rotating shifts, without seeing daylight for months on end, and being unable to communicate with family or friends. The only caveat I have is that I would miss my wife and son (and they would miss me). My wife would understand for the money though. She already experienced this earlier in our relationship, when I left for up to six months on Navy submarine deployments. On submarines, there is no significant communication either way. (To be precise, she could send me ten 40-word “familygrams” over the course of the deployment, which were screened and sometimes censored. I could not contact her at all unless we made a port visit.) It would be harder with respect to my 13-year old son, but I’d do it for the sake of his future.
