> Yes, one of the things that has fit in the ship, along with the engines themselves, radiation shielding (both from the engines and from cosmic/solar radiation) food, water, and air supplies for several months, life support equipment, living space, and elaborate, bulky solar sails on retractable booms.

The NASA mission was supposed to be preceded by a Seadragon ship containing all of those supplies. In theory all of that stuff should be at the landing site.

That comment makes no sense. What I listed are things needed _for the voyage out_, not after arrival.

Sorry, yes, you’re right. They need a whole lot of supplies for the voyage. But I’ve been amazed at how much bigger Phoenix is, and part of the explanation was that it contained all of the stuff needed once they land, and in the case of the NASA mission, all of that stuff was sent ahead.

(BTW, why did Margo not ask what the Soviets want to do with the borrowed equipment?)

I could swear at one time the CGI model looked almost like a Space Shuttle Orbiter.

FYI, Phoenix is the thing built by the private company Helios that incorporates Karen Baldwin’s space hotel. Sojourner is the NASA craft that looks a bit like an advanced Space Shuttle.

There is a disturbing lack of Molly this season.

But Newtons and iPods living together… what a time to be alive the alternate mid-1990s must be.

Agreed on both points. I thought it was hilarious that this alternate universe is one where the Newton was apparently fully functional and a rousing success.

> My guess for the next episode is that the Phoenix ship will have to pick up whoever is left on Sojourner, including those rescued from Mars-94.

Close enough to your guess and mine. The utterly unprofessional hot-dog landing just to be “first” broke Sojourner, meaning the unprofessional American fuckups and the unprofessional Russian fuckups will have to hitch a ride home with the unprofessional civilian fuckups. At least the ones who haven’t killed each other by the end of the season.

I admit I was surprised to see the American flag above the Soviet flag at the joint US/USSR base camp (or was it at the landing site?). My understanding of the protocol is that usually national flags are at the same height. (I almost expected one of the Soviets to go back and change things so their flag was higher.)

Well, Happy Valley Base was originally just the American site. As they mentioned in this episode, what was to be the Soviet Base is now floating off into the cosmos aboard Mars-94. The U.S. crew probably demanded that their flag be higher as a result.

Given what Alexei and Kelly were getting up to, I certainly hope the crew packed some birth control and/or condoms. I guess they can claim to be the first members of the 114 million mile high club.

I thought this was the best episode in a while. Tyler being gay and coming out made perfect sense, and his arguments with Dani seemed very reasonable and real.

Lots of interesting stuff going on. I kept being afraid the episode was over and then happy when more stuff kept happening.

Also it just jumped out at me that we’re about to see a Lewinsky scandal, with those two guys who were talking at the end being Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp.

They not only did that, but I’m willing to bet that the underground water source is full of all sorts of Martian germs that are going to get them all kinds of sick.

Wondering what Jimmy Stevens friends are up to exactly. They didn’t have him steal that ID badge only to steal the statue from out front of the JSC.

Yeah, having a microbiologist with them (and angry about corner-cutting) is definitely a Chekhov’s Nguyen.

Although I would _really_ respect the balls of the show if some ancient [Berserker](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker_(novel_series)) that they had awakened came stalking out of the dust.

So we know the phone line in the Oval is being recorded, do we know if the entire office itself is also bugged? I forget. The bugged phone was a narrative device in the first few seasons IIRC, now it may turn out to be a plot device. Either way, Ellen and Larry blurting out all the truth in the Oval instead of, say, their bedroom does not seem a particularly wise move.

Also, hey, guy-who-the-commander-just-dressed-down-for-taking-drugs-in-front-of-all-of-us, would you mind keeping an eye on this critical gauge at this critical moment while I turn my back and not pay any attention? Cool, thanks!
