So is it the generals or the news media who are responsible for this asinine “troop = soldier” thing? “Three troops dead in Afghanistan today” - wow, that’s like dozens of dudes, right? Oh, I forgot, the words _soldier, sailor, Marine,_ and _airman_ are unfashionable or something.

Those would be lesser arguments. But only if you’re an L2 speaker of English, because no native speaker would phrase things that awkwardly.
