I thought this was going to be about the Musical
Nope. It’s really all about the pie. ![]()
Von Goom’s gambit.
(All you’ll ever need.)
This looks familiar. Could it be one of the stories featured in [The Chess Companion: A Merry Collection Of Tales Of Chess And Its Players, Together With A Cornucopia Of Games, Problems, Epigrams & Advice, Topped Off With The Greatest Game Of Chess Ever Played
by Irving Chernev](The Chess Companion by Irving Chernev | Goodreads)
If not, what’s a source for it?
My chess books are packed away and I know there are several dealing with auxiliary topics related to the game. Fun reading, for the most part.
It was one of several chess-related stories in an anthology called “Pawn to Infinity”. There was another by G.R.R. Martin that was quite good as well.

I’m a professional chess teacher (now retired.)
I have played annotated games here, for the benefit of all.
If anyone would like another game, I’m up for it!
(I would have posted links to some of the games, but the Search feature is playing up…)
I think “smothered mate” used in conversation would draw some interesting looks.
There can be no doubt! ![]()

Zeldar, thanks for that research!
Hold a tournament!
Where do you play? I’m on chess.com…
Sounds like a fun idea. How would you set such a thing up? Play here? Some other site where screen names could be preserved? Round Robin?
Does anybody happen to remember an episode of “Mission: Impossible” A Game of Chess?
There was also an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: Season 1, Episode 7 – The Giuoco Piano Affair
These were on TV at about the time I began playing at a chess club and getting into USCF-rated tournaments and matches. Good memories! ![]()

Anyone else remember the episode of “Soldiers of Fortune” from the middle fifties and starring John Russell. The idea in that one was that one of the stars had to beat some dictator who was super proud of his chess ability in order to obtain the release of a captive. Somehow the SOF was able to get an expert to relay plays through an earphone to him so he could ultimately promote a pawn and astound the dictator by promoting it to a knight and check mating for the win. I always wondered if this was based on a real game.
Sorry about the delay.
I don’t play Internet chess, but my proposal was that we have a game a move at a time in a thread here, with comments and advice by me throughout.
See Zeldar’s post #32 in this thread for examples.
Let me know if you’re interested…
