# For Christ's Sake, Stop Coming to Our House!

No, the self centered, cranky and whiney people are the ones that think knocking on a door obligates the person living there to answer it.

Calling before you show up is the polite and correct thing to do unless you and the person behind the door have an understanding that says you can just drop buy.

Thank you! Strangers do not have an undisputed claim to my time. Friends don’t have an undisputed claim to my time. Family members of further distance than sibling, partner, or parent do not have an undisputed claim on my time. People not in the immediate family category who expect me to answer the door just because they knocked are the ones who are self-centered, cranky and whiney.

I don’t see how this is a discussion of manners. Miss Manners herself describes manners as “what you do in public.” Your home isn’t public. She also described the answering machine as the modern day equivalent of your butler telling people “The Lady is not receiving today” or your servant girl saying “The Missus ain’t home.”

Put me on the “don’t come a-knocking list.” I’m at work 9 - 10 hours a day, five or six days a week. If you can’t call me then to make plans, I ain’t going. When I’m home, I want to relax and not be bothered.

I once ignored the Police when they rang my bell at midnight (they were looking for someone who shot at them and then disappeared).
