# (for manhattan) codes for special characters

As explained in that thread, though HTML is currently disallowed in posts, you can still use codes to make special characters in your post. For example, I can include a copyright symbol by typing in © which will show up as ©. Below is a list of the “special” characters that are not immediately obvious from the keyboard. Some have “name codes”, and some don’t, so I separated those in the list to make it more readable.

Some of these characters may not be displayed properly depending on your web browser (i.e. which web browser or what version of the browser.)

Sorry, no subscript characters as far as I know. Hopefully some committee will decide to add subscript characters and expand the superscript characters to at least 0 through 9 and a through z. Thought there might not be a lot of call for that due to the HTML tags allowing you to do subscripts and superscripts.

It’s probably more likely that the UBB software will one day allow codes to create subscripts and superscripts.

That’s correct, UncleBeer, but in some cases the codes come in handy.  
[ul][li]Not everyone uses Windows. If you’re posting using Netscape on VAX/VMS, for example, how would you make those codes?[/li][li]Does the character map have the euro symbol?[/li]For some posts, you **must** use the codes. e.g. if I want to show someone how to do bolding in UBB, I can use the codes to show them that it’s by using \*\* and \*\*[/ul]

Nope, In fact it doesn’t have any of the symbols produced by numeric codes greater than 255. For general posting though, it certainly cuts down on the quantity of information I have to memorize.

Although, now that I think about it, I really don’t have to memorize anything, since I usually have a word processor open (as well as a dictionary/thesaurus & an encyclopedia) when I’m posting; I could just put all those codes in a document and open that.

**Thufferin** , I don’t know whether or not you were being facetious, but your Euro symbol showed up as a simple square (the sort that appears in some editors in place of unprintable characters).

I use Netscape 4.7 but also have IE5 and I see the simple square with both. I would guess that it has to do with the fonts that I have installed rather than the browser.

I’m using IE 5 and I see the Euro symbol…

Now, granted, I don’t think the Euro is included, but I just use the ASCII coding…

ones I know off by heart

é is alt + 0233  
• is alt + 0149  
° is alt + 0176  
etc…

I find them to be much fast.

Also, Arnold, how do you tell it not to display the & sequences as the characters they stand for?

Instead of typing in “&”, replace it with its code equivalent, &. Which is what I had to do to make “&” show up expanded, instead of a single &.

Is that confusing enough?

I had to get a patch for Windows 95 from the Microsoft site (url as one would expect) which updated the fonts to include the Euro symbol.
