Hee hee hee… As an American who grew up watching Magnum PI, imagine my shock when I saw Blazing Saddles and said “Wow, that guy does a great American accent!”

Surely, you jest. I mean, you’re British and I’m not, so I’ll take your word for it, but Angelus ranks right up there with Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood for me. Both of their accents came and went, probably depending on what day that particular scene was shot and whether the dialog (that’s for you Brits!) coach had the day off. Obviously James Marsters’ Spike was over the top, but to me it was much more consistent, at least.
I agree about Paltrow (and have tried the same DvD whoosh). It was the first time I had ever seen her and was very surprised subsequently to discover that she was not (Estuary) English.

There was a thread in which we discussed the accents of the character of Daphne and her family on Frazier. I think we figured out what was really going on. They were apparently deliberately bad. Daphne’s accent was bad because the actress really did come from Manchester, but someone decided that if she used her real accent it would be hard to understand. Instead, she used a toned-down version of the accent that didn’t sound realistic to anyone from Manchester.
Somebody then decided that it would be funny if everybody in her family spoke in a different British accent. They thought this would be a joke on American TV viewers who can’t pick out realistic, consistent British accents. The actors they cast as the members of Daphne’s family came from all over the U.K. and spoke with their natural accents. Finally, to insult the viewers even more, they cast Anthony LaPaglia as her brother. He’s an Australian who has used a New York accent in his roles so consistently for so many years that that is how he speaks all the time now. They had him speaking in a bad imitation of a Cockney accent.
Nope - she was born in London and raised in Sussex. It is true that she makes no attempt to do an authentic Mancunian accent, but focused on doing the accent so that the American audience would be able to understand her.
Apparently that’s James Marsters imitating Anthony Head (Giles)'s *natural *accent.
