Don’t listen to horror stories.  
The placenta-boiling story, with all due respect to your co-worker’s cousin, is most likely a myth.

OB/GYN nurse here—email me if you want.  
Cutting the umbilical cord doesn’t cause pain to mom or baby.  
If the perineum must be cut, a pudental block can be administered.

Labor is different for everyone.

It’s a freight train. Once it starts, you’re on for the whole ride, so just roll with it. I found that idea pretty liberating, really.
