Every once in a while a word or phrase from when I was growing up will pop into my head and I’ll use it in an e-mail to my brother. It always cracks him up.
Today, for no apparent reason, the phrase “making butt” (for making a fool of yourself) popped into my head. Does anyone remember that one?

I also remember “gelled” for messing up . . . “dude, I totally gelled”
“Bagger” was a term for a loser / geek, as in someone is such a dweeb they carry their weed in a brown paper bag.

Someone who was “picked out” had a lot of acne.

If you had eaten a lot, you “mowed”.

Whatever happened to “pud” and “nards”?

So, what no longer used phrases do you all remember?

Oooh, that sounds vaguely familiar. Kind of the next iteration of “what a burn!”

Oh, and “dookie” was dog shit, which then led us to call the part of our backyard where the dog did his business “dookieland”, which ever after led us to refer to the \*Movieland Wax Museum \*as “Dookieland Wax Museum”.
Is that where Green Day got their album title from?

If you’d brought a packed lunch to school (rather than going home, or to the cafeteria) you were “going packies”. I doubt it’s used nowadays, given it sounds like a racist term for Asians in the UK.

I remember lots of slang from my childhood actually:

Zinter - someone who wore old dirty clothes all the time, eg: Corey, why are you always such a zinter?

Plussy - quality of being attractive or wanted, eg: Dude, those new shoes are fucking plussy!

The Colonel - nick name for authority, police, government, eg: Fucking Colonel pulled me over last night for speeding.

Tilling - the act of hiding things for retrieval later, eg: Quick, till that weed man before we get caught!

Pincer - guy who gets a lot of action, eg: John banged 3 girls last weekend the lucky pincer!

450 - A large amount, a zillion, eg: He must have like 450 porno mags in his closet I swear. (I have no idea why it was 450 honestly… just was)

This is very specific to the city I grew up in, Birmingham (UK).

**Bostin** , _meaning brilliant, great_, eg. ‘Duran Duran are bostin’ (that dates me).

I’ll have to ask my boyfriend about that one (he grew up in Wolverhampton). One that he says, which may be from a movie or something, is, when I eat peanut butter he calls it “Biafra’s cack”. It’s gross, but as far as slang goes it is _Bostin_ 😛

This. And if you were pointing out to a friend that he was _moded_, you would tell him to _“scratch your neck”_.

Southern California, circa 1981.

I had never heard kipe before until a co-worker used it quite a bit but in situations where I was never able to ask her the meaning… and it always sounded more like “kyke.” So it freaked me out.

“We’re just going to go in and see if we can kipe some seats.”

One day I heard it as KIPE.
I think I just searched “kipe” to see if that’s what it was. Its nordic in origin I think.

I haven’t heard/used “make butt” since the late 70s/early 80s.
That went out about the same time as "bitchin’ " and “radical” as synonyms for cool. I still hear “gnarly” coming from the local skatepunks.

Late 70’s early 80’s. A good looking guy or girl was a fox. “He’s such a fox!” An unattractive guy or girl was a dog. A cigarette was a vid. “Lemme bum a vid.” If a guy wanted a girl to be his girlfriend, he ask her, “Will you go with me?” I don’t know where they were supposed to be going , but whatever.
One that we had just for our local group. If you were at a party for example and some person is mingling with you, but they won’t let you leave and are hogging the whole conversation. Plus, they’re a bit on the weird side. If one of your friends walks by, you get their attention by singing the beginning if the Immigrant Song. The screaming part, not when the lyrics start. that was the clue that you needed saving from a weird guy. My friend would com over, talk for a minute, then make an excuse why we ha to leave. I known it was mean, but we were teenagers.

I see you list “Hollywood Riviera” as your location. For me, \*that in itself \*qualifies as a long forgotten term ( nobody but those who live/ lived there know the term, AFAIK, and I haven’t lived there in 20+ years). Did you grow up there?
